A young man Billy Costane appears in John Clum's newspaper with a question. He is looking for an Evangeline Murphy but no one seems to know who she is. Clum does not recognize the name but a picture of her tells him it is Evie Marlowe, a saloon singer. Billy drops in at the Alhambra to hear her sing and introduce himself. He enjoys her singing but she has no clue as to who he is. Her boyfriend Carl Duval seeing the confrontation knocks Billy out. Clum helps Billy and takes him to Earp along with Evie and Carl. Billy saw her ad in a magazine and has been corresponding with her for months. Six months earlier they became engaged with Billy sending her %500 to pay her debts and fare to come to him. Earp decides to start with Sam Dutton the photographer. He seems to be lying but Earp will know more after talking to the postmaster and checking Dutton's records. However, that night a fire in Dutton's shop and a dead Dutton force Earp to look elsewhere for answers.
Did You Know?
In the West, a name was only a name and it might be a mask to hide many things. One didn't inquire into it too closely unless it became necessary, as it often did for Wyatt Earp. For behind the masking names were people and their problems.
