  • Frank Thorpe is a contractor with a very shady past. He is accused of hiring one of his workers to kill a competitor. This episode begins with Thorpe in his jail cell awaiting the jury's verdict. The jury members are in thir hotel rooms having not reached a verdict that day. They think and talk about the case and we see events through their eyes. We also see the Prestons and the District Attorney waiting for the verdict. The elder Preston knows Thorpe is the type of man who could have done what he is accused of but does not believe he committed the crime. He also marvels at Thorpe's cold indifference to what is going on around him. Thorpe's one redeeming trait is that he loves his wife who supports him 100%. Thorpe's accuser has a criminal past and the elder Preston does a good job of attacking his credibility. Although his attorneys feel it is important for Thorpe to take the stand and deny the accusation himself, Thorpe is adamant that he will not do so. The jury deliberates again the next morning and reaches a verdict. Just before they deliver it however, Thorpe confides to the elder Preston that he is guilty - he hired the employee to kill his competitor. Preston listens in stunned silence as the jury pronounces Thorpe "not guilty".
