Solomon is a newspaper man who sold his paper 10 years earlier and has been drunk ever since. His letters to his sister Agnes in the East have been lies about his success and wealth. When she writes that she and her grown daughter Louise are coming to visit him, Solomon talks with his friend and current owner of the newspaper who has never married because he has always loved Agnes even though she married another. The newspaper owner cannot let Solomon break Agnes's heart with his wasted situation so he meets the ladies himself along with his assistant (who admired Solomon for Solomon's earlier work), and after learning that Agnes is widowed, tells the women that Solomon is out of town on business and could be weeks getting back. When Agnes says they will just stay in Solomon's suite until his return, the newspaper owner must make arrangements and complete work on making Solomon presentable.
