Max von Sydow,
A 14th century Crusader returns to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence. A priest, a grieving knight, a disgraced itinerant and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl. When the embattled party arrives at the abbey, a horrific discovery jeopardises the knight's pledge to ensure the girl fair treatment, and pits them against an inexplicably powerful and destructive force.Written by
The demon follows the incredibly convoluted plan of possessing a girl so she would get accused of being a witch and being brought to the monastery, when he could have easily just flown to the monastery himself, or possessed someone inside/near the monastery to reach his goal much faster and with little to no resistance. " If You're a Witch, you can be sure you'll get a fair trial, before we burn you "
In the Middle Ages, there were many ways for a young nobleman to earn his place in heaven. Among the more popular were becoming a Priest, buying absolution also called an Indulgence or one could enlist in a Holy Crusade. This story written by Bragi F. Schut and Directed by Dominic Sena, selects' a Fourteen century tale wherein Two Knights Sir Behmen and Sir Felson (Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman) who are charged with desertion. To regain back their honor and their souls, they must transport a suspected witch (Claire Foy) to a remote mountain abbey where she will be tried by Holy monks. To accompany them on their dangerous journey, two others will guide them through the black woods, perilous mountains and murderous packs of wolves. Ulrich Thomsen is Eckhart, Stephen Graham is Hagamar and Robert Sheehan is Kay. If the dark story is not frightening enough, there is Christopher Lee as Cardinal D'Ambroise. His Black Plague make-up is impressive as is the spectral images throughout the eerie movie. In time, the special effects alone will lift this offering into the annals of the Classics. Well done!. ****
