In the future, people of Earth attempt to colonize other inhabitable planets. One of them is a planet dubbed Pern (short for Parallel Earth, Resources Negligible). The colonists settle in and develop an agrarian culture, but then discover that a comet that passes the planet every couple of hundred years carries in its tail a deadly viral pathogen that kills all life. Some colonists try to evacuate, but most hide in the underground caves. Believing that the colony is dead and planet uninhabitable due to the viral danger, Earth ships leave Pern for good. The survivors are many, however, and they develop dragon-like creatures from fire lizards through bioengineering. These "dragons" have telepathic link with a human of their choosing who becomes their rider. These dragonriders with the help of their fire-breading flying dragons manage to destroy the spores.
