Major John Hampden Gordon, of the Royal Yorkshire Fusiliers, was shot through the lung at Waterloo and left for dead on the field. He was found by some ghoulish peasants of Hougoumont and saved. His English doctor ordered him to the balsamic airs of the Canadian pine forests, and he came to the trading post of James Anderson, a Scotch fur trader who had married a half blood Mississauga woman, and had a daughter, Elspeth, of great beauty. She nursed the Major to health, and they loved deeply and eternally. His father refused his consent to what he termed a mesalliance and the Major, forfeiting all claim to his estates, showed his appreciation and love for Elspeth by marrying her.
