The Sound of Silence (Michael Tyburski)

What if our happiness wasn’t solely predicated on our fruitful relationships, career success, or spiritual fulfillment, but rather the sounds around us? It’s this idea that drives music theorist and self-proclaimed house tuner Peter (Peter Sarsgaard) to the point of maddening obsession in The Sound of Silence. The directorial debut of Michael Tyburski has a compelling hook as we go on this journey of aural perfection, but the follow-through leaves something to be desired. In terms of its thematic predecessors, The Conversation and Blow Out set an impossibly high bar, but even the narrative propulsion of those classics

Da Pennebaker: restless, brilliant film-maker plugged into the 1960s zeitgeist

Pennebaker, who has died aged 94, epitomised the counterculture with his interest in the legends of music as well as the backstage drama of politics

The revolutionary film-maker Da Pennebaker, with his passion for music and political drama, invented tropes, ideas and procedures which became almost invisibly embedded in pop culture.

When Saturday Night Live did a sketch with Hillary Clinton at the door of a state “elector”, mutely begging her to vote for anyone but Donald Trump with a series of flashcards, of course everyone saw the reference to Love Actually. But the great meme-ancestor of that moment was Bob Dylan standing in an alley behind the Savoy Hotel in London in Pennebaker’s classic 1967 film Dont Look Back and with deadpan aplomb unveiling a succession of flashcards to Subterranean Homesick Blues with key lyrics punningly misspelt (and he did the whole thing in one continuous take - not easy).

Nathalie Emmanuel on ‘Four Weddings’ and Leaving ‘Game of Thrones’ Behind

Nathalie Emmanuel on ‘Four Weddings’ and Leaving ‘Game of Thrones’ Behind
Nathalie Emmanuel is having a heady 2019, whichever way you slice it. She was involved in one of the most controversial TV moments of the year, when her “Game of Thrones” character, Missandei, was decapitated in Episode 4 of the HBO megahit’s final season. The moment divided audiences, with many online fans calling for a better ending to the character that Emmanuel had brought to life for six seasons.

Now, the British actress is moving on to the Hulu miniseries “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” adapted from the 1994 picture written by Richard Curtis. Emmanuel spoke with Variety about being whisked into “Four Weddings” at the last minute and the mixed emotions of leaving “Game of Thrones” behind.

What attracted you to a “Four Weddings” adaptation?

I knew that Mindy [Kaling] was writing it, which is why I wanted to get involved. I turned up for the audition, but they cast somebody else.

Mindy Kaling and Hulu’s ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ Is Diverse TV, and Smart Business

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for the first seven episodes of Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”]

Rom-coms are dead, so they say. (And say.) The time-honored genre now threatens to become a never-ending obituary, but Mindy Kaling saw it differently: By subverting the cliches, she could turn Richard Curtis’ classic “Four Weddings and a Funeral” into a fresh and unexpected Hulu series.

Some things are familiar: Kash (Nikesh Patel) walks from the altar and finds himself at a crossroads. His father encourages him to explore an arranged marriage through the family’s mosque. So far, so prosaic: an arranged-marriage storyline, played for laughs.

However, these laughs don’t stem from a sense of “other-ing” the characters, a leering mean-spiritedness that can mar rom-coms. Kash’s burgeoning relationship is earnest, and organic — a key distinction for the trope-allergic young audiences whom streaming services attract.

Beyond the business motivations of adapting familiar IP, diversifying its cast and their storylines is a clever and strategic creative move.

Williams and James star alongside Last Tango In Halifax’s Anne Reid and Love Actually’s Kris Marshall in the eight-part series. Produced by Death in Paradise producer Red Planet Pictures, it was written by War and Peace and Mr Selfridge writer Andrew Davies.

Written only months before Austen’s death in 1817, Sanditon tells the story of the impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood, played by Williams, and her spiky relationship with the charming Sidney Parker, played by James. Box Office: ‘Yesterday’ Crosses $100 Million Milestone

  • Variety
Universal’s “Yesterday,” a musical fantasy set to the Beatles biggest hits, made it the $100 million mark with a little help from its fans.

The milestone is a counterprogramming win for the original romantic-comedy in a summer season that’s otherwise been dominated by superhero fare and big-budget blockbusters. After four weeks in theaters, “Yesterday” has earned $59.15 million in North America and $41.8 million overseas. The film has yet to open in 24 foreign markets and will continue rolling out at the international box office in coming months.

Danny Boyle, the filmmaker behind “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Trainspotting,” directed “Yesterday,” which was written by Richard Curtis (“Love Actually”). The film follows an aspiring songwriter (Himesh Patel), who becomes a musical sensation after a freak accident leaves him as the only person who remembers the Beatles. The cast also includes Lily James, Ed Sheeran and Kate McKinnon.

‘Four Weddings and A Funeral’ Review: Hulu Upends Expectations in an Endearing Update

Hulu’s “Four Weddings and A Funeral” begins the exact same way as the 1994 film, with a madly panicked “Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.” dash out of the house by someone who egregiously overslept.

But from that point forward, Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton’s show takes on a life of its own. The titular four weddings and a funeral will happen, of course, and there are plenty of homages to the rom-com classic sprinkled throughout the show, but the story that unfolds bears little resemblance to the Hugh Grant-Andie MacDowell dorks-in-love Best Picture nominee.

Interior decorator Ainsley (Rebecca Rittenhouse), school teacher Duffy (John Reynolds), and finance whiz Craig (Brandon Mychal Smith) are a trio of Americans that wind up moving to London after college graduation; the action opens when their pal, Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel) arrives to join them on the other side of the pond. Kaling’s

A Look Back at The Walking Dead's First Ever Comic-Con

Back in 2010, one little zombie show descended upon San Diego Comic-Con.  AMC's The Walking Dead was not yet the monster hit it would soon become, and at its first con appearance, the panel didn't even start with any cast members presentl. Most of the cast members weren't even really famous yet, since most people still knew Andrew Lincoln as the guy with the signs in Love Actually. (We still sometimes only think of him like this.)  The first part of the panel featured AMC exec Joel Stillerman, Ep Greg Nicotero, Ep Gale Anne Hurd, Ep Frank Darabont, and comic book creator Robert Kirkland, and took place just a few months before the series would premiere for the first time in October...
