In the remote countryside of Ilocos, Phillipines various women are sexually abused by local men. Two friends, Tonya, a sexually repressed young woman, and Selda, a promiscuous woman, compete for Simon, the butcher and the most attractive man in the village. Tonya teaches catechism to the children of the village, because the priest left the village. She is secretly sexually attracted to Simon, but openly despises him and refuses his sexual advances. And he has an affair with Mona, but he is ready to give up for Tonya. Her paradoxical behavior is to be found in her past, which resurfaces when Selda, returns. Selda, after a five-year exile comes home from the city with her American lover Ronald, who leaves shortly afterward. She's the exact opposite of Tonya, as her views on sex are more liberal and less guilt-filled.Written by
This is a truly disturbing and beautifully made piece of cinema that definitely goes places where other films fear to tread.
Those wishing to gawp at another cheesy exploiter will probably not find much to enjoy here. There are exploitative elements aplenty, but they're not simply thrown in for cheap thrills. This is a film that delivers a powerful emotional punch if you're prepared to let it work its magic on you.
There was a cut and badly dubbed English version on the "gray market" a while back. Seeing this remastered, correctly framed version with the original soundtrack is like discovering the film for the first time.
Don't miss it.
