‘Silicon Valley’ Review: Richard and Jared Tap Into Their Darker Sides As the Show’s Wheels Spin

‘Silicon Valley’ Review: Richard and Jared Tap Into Their Darker Sides As the Show’s Wheels Spin
After a season that’s seen them have to claw back from the bottom, it’s easy to wonder when the Pied Piper crew will catch a break. The cosmic, bleak comedy of Richard Hendricks’ career is that he keeps stumbling into weekly, lightbulb-over-his-head discoveries that, on any other show, would have landed him at the top of the industry by now. But in the world of “Silicon Valley,” good ideas barely ever get these characters past the next scene.

Richard’s life as an app entrepreneur (apptrepreneur?) hasn’t always been the healthiest. But in the show’s increasing efforts to show the full weight of jockeying for position in the tech world, Richard got a less than clean bill of health. Instead of merely showing him as a sleep-deprived zombie, this doctor’s visit hinted that it’s not just his psyche that’s taking a beating by

'Game of Thrones' Live Blog - 'The Winds of Winter' are howling
Social media is dark and full of terrors spoilers. To avoid spoiling the fun for fans on the west coast and those who have to wait to beg, borrow, or steal an HBO Go password, this season I’m confining my stream-of-consciousness thoughts to this liveblog. Follow along or flee in fear. Here there be spoilers! Catch up on Episode Nine, 'Battle of the Bastards,' over here. ************************** [8:58Pm Edt] - Here we go! This is it. Nine weeks of political intrigue and maneuvering has led up to the Season 6 finale of Game of Thrones. It's still anyone's game (except Ramsay's, Finally) and the episode has a lot of loose ends to tie up. What's the secret Cersei knows? Will the Tyrells stand for Loras's trial? Will Tommen die now or later? Have we seen the last of Arya this season? Is Davos going to straight up murder Melisandre? And where do

'Game of Thrones' brings back a long-absent character, and welcomes some new ones
A review of tonight's Game of Thrones coming up just as soon as I wonder if you're the worst person I've ever met... "Never too late to come back." -Brother Ray "The Broken Man" does an unusual thing, structurally: it's the first mid-season Game of Thrones episode to open with a scene before the credits (the show did cold opens in some of its early season premieres, like Tywin melting down Ned's sword), revealing that the Hound survived his wounds from the fight against Brienne, not to mention Arya's decision to abandon him to a slow and agonizing death, rather than the quick one he pleaded for. I have mixed feelings about the return of Sandor Clegane, since I love the actor and character, but think Arya's decision to leave him bleeding in the middle of nowhere is uglier and more powerful if he actually stayed dead. But his

Tony settles all Family business as 'The Sopranos' season 1 ends spectacularly
Welcome to the final installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the season finale, “I Dream of Jeannie Cusamano," coming up just as soon as I remind you that I'm not a big Renee Zellweger fan... "Cunnilingus and psychiatry brought us to this!" -Tony David Chase, as many of you know by now, didn't want to make another TV show.

Revisiting Star Trek Tng: The Loss

Lieutenant Troi goes mind-blind in this week's Star Trek: The Next Generation look-back...

This review contains spoilers.

The episode opens with Troi counselling Ensign Brooks over her unwillingness to deal with her husband's death (Ensign Brooks', that is, not Troi. Troi's totally over it) but as she says goodbye, she's stricken with a debilitating headache. On the bridge, Worf notices some weird sensor images, but can't explain what they are. Rather than hang around to find out, the Enterprise tries to leave but stalls immediately, throwing everyone forward slightly. This is what happens when someone other than Wesley does the driving.

In her office, Deanna contacts Crusher complaining of dizziness, but Crusher has a tonne of minor injuries to deal with so she tells Deanna to hang tight. On the bridge, the Enterprise crew are probing their situation and realising that they may well be stuck. Without Wesley to solve the problem,

The characters go through the transformation from ‘being a queen’ to purely ‘being themselves’.”

The Brains Tribe has an average Iq of 130 which is, honestly, not all that impressive. I mean, they're smart, but they're not Geena Davis smart. Spencer tied for first in the World Open Chess Championship and says he's both diabolical and a genius. If you say so! David is the President of the Marlins, which means that if there's a challenge that requires salary dumping, he's going to be hard to top. Kass is a lawyer who boasts about being undefeated, which is the kind of thing John Grisham characters boast about, that and smart older secretaries who have forgotten more law than most of us will ever know. Watch Billy Bob Thornton in a Fargo Teaser

Watch Billy Bob Thornton in a Fargo Teaser
FX's Fargo miniseries, starring Martin Freeman, Kate Walsh, Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Colin Hanks, and Billy Bob Thornton, launches in April. The network has released the first teaser footage for the show. (The series is set in the same spiritual universe as the film, but the plots and characters don't overlap.) Based even on this tiny sliver of footage, it seems the TV version has effectively embraced the movie's tone and aesthetic: weird hairdos, snow, bone-deep human despair. My kingdom for a stronger windshield wiper.

So Young (2013) Movie Review

So Young” sees Chinese actress Zhao Wei stepping behind the camera to make her directorial debut, backed by veteran producer Stanley Kwan (“Rouge”, “Centre Stage”). For her first outing as helmer, the popular “Red Cliff” and “Painted Skin: The Resurrection” star chose to adapt a novel by Xin Yiwu, which follows a collection of friends as they experience love and loss at college and then again in later life. A surprise smash hit at the domestic box office (and recently having been chosen to screen at the 2013 London Film Festival), the film has a top ensemble cast of appropriately youthful talent, headed by Yang Zishan (“In Case of Love”), Mark Chao (“Caught in the Web”) and singer Han Geng (“My Kingdom”). The film begins in the mid-1990s, with Yang Zishan as Zheng Wei, a small town girl who heads to a big city university with hopes of reuniting with

The Assassins: DVD Review

Director: Zhao Lin Shan. Review: Adam Wing. An epic tale of love, power and betrayal, The Assassins is another big screen account of the life and times of Cao Cao. Forgive us for lacking excitement over here, Cao Cao has appeared in more films than Samuel L. Jackson, though I'm pretty sure his box office success pales by comparison; he wouldn't quite cut it with a purple lightsaber either. In the early era of the Chinese Han Dynasty, Prime Minister Cao Cao (Chow Yun Fat) ventured to the east and savagely defeated China's greatest warrior, Lv Bu. He terrified every warlord in the country and crowned himself King of Wei. Meanwhile, young lovers Mu Shun (Tamaki Hiroshi) and Ling Jv (Crystal Liu Yi Fei) were taken from a prison camp to a hidden tomb where they spent five cruel years being trained as assassins for a secret mission. The Assassins

Teacups Are Invading! Bizarre, Wacky Trailer For Sci-Fi Quest For The Power Sphere (Buscando La Esfera Del Poder)

"They came to destroy our world. But we will destroy it first." After watching the bizarre, wacky, lovable teaser trailer for Argentine filmmaker Tetsuo Lumiere's Quest for the Power Sphere (Buscando la Esfera del Poder), I must conclude that it's the first alien invasion movie I've seen in which the extraterrestrials arrive in spaceships that resemble teacups. Lumiere has many made short films. His first feature was titled TL1: My Kingdom for a Flying Saucer, which should provide a clue as to his sensibilities; he also made a sequel, TL2: Happiness is an Urban Legend. In between, he made a documentary consisting entirely of images from YouTube, Hotels and Other Temporary Accommodations. As for Quest for the Power Sphere, the official synopsis says it's about "princesses and...

Meet the Chinese Superstar Cast in ‘Transformers 4′ Via His Music Video for ‘Cloud Atlas’

While one giant robot movie is rounding out a disappointing opening weekend, another continues to announce cast members a year ahead of its own release. This morning, Michael Bay welcomed Asian superstar Han Geng into the fold of Transformers 4, in which he’ll join a cast consisting of Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz, Kelsey Grammar, Sophia Myles and fellow China-based actress Li Bingbing. Han is a singer and actor who can be seen heading up his country’s second highest-grossing domestic release of 2013, So Young (it’s neck and neck with top-grossing Hollywood import, Iron Man 3, and both are now in the top ten of all time there). To give you an idea of how popular he is, just peruse YouTube’s many abridged yet still lengthy versions of the college drama featuring only Han’s scenes. Before becoming a movie star, Han got his start as a member of the South Korean boy

Transformers 4 Adds Asian Pop Star Han Geng to the Cast

  • Cinelinx
Paramount is working closely with China in a production deal they set up for Transformers 4, meaning they'll be filming over in the country and it will play some role in the film's story. With filming currently underway for the film, we got word earlier that Han Geng has been added to the cast. Come inside for all the details.

Paramount sent us word just a bit ago that Han Geng, and Asian superstar, has been added to the cast of Transformers 4, though they haven't specified what role he'll be playing, nor how major his character might be. So far, there's not been much in the way of information on the actual plot of the film (crazy considering, this franchise hasn't been known for it's veil of secrecy). Read on for the full press release:

He joins Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles and another Chinese actor, Li Bingbing, for the film that is set to be released in less than a year. Director Michael Bay shared few words about the casting in a news release from Paramount, saying that Geng has been a "sensation in China, and we are happy to have him in our movie." Geng, 29, who is listed as Geng Han on Internet Movie Database, most recently appeared in the Chinese drama "So Young."
