  • MovieWeb
Surprise, surprise, Micael Bay isn't leaving the action genre behind anytime soon. The explosion-aficionado is set to direct an action flick titled Black 5 for Sony. There have been no plot details revealed yet, but it is reportedly being developed as a video game as well, as many of Bay's movies are.

The story derives from an original idea from Michael Bay, and the mysterious screenplay comes from Ehren Kruger (The Ghost in the Shell). Bay and Kruger previously worked on the scripts for the Transformers sequels together. While the men behind the Benghazi film 13 Hours, Bay and Erwin Stoff, will also serve as producers on Sony's new high action film.

How 'The Lion King' Sound Team Re-created the Stampede and That Iconic Roar
Just prior to the release of Jon's Favreau's box office record-breaking The Lion King, the film's supervising sound editor, designer and rerecording mixer Christopher Boyes talked with The Hollywood Reporter about working to create the live-action remake's thunderous stampede, animal and bird vocalizations, and even a surprising use of a roar from the 1994 animated Lion King.

"We'd listen to the original to see what they did, because there was a lot of reverence paid to the original approach," said Skywalker Sound's Boyes, a four-time Oscar winner for Titanic, Pearl Harbor, The Lord ...

The Trailer For the Action-Packed Midway Movie Is Here, and Wow, the Cast Is Stacked

  • Popsugar
Midway is one of the many movies based on a true story coming out this year, and the first trailer already looks promising. The war film, which is directed by Roland Emmerich, centers around Us Navy sailors and aviators who fought in the Battle of Midway during World War II. Not only is the two-minute trailer action-packed, but we can't get over how stacked the cast is.

Woody Harrelson and Dennis Quaid play Navy admirals Chester Nimitz and William "Bull" Halsey, respectively, while actors like Ed Skrein, Luke Evans, Luke Kleintank, Darren Criss, and Nick Jonas make appearances as sailors and aviators. Seriously, can we talk about Jonas's mustache? The film also promises to be just as emotional as 2001's Pearl Harbor, as we get a glimpse of Mandy Moore playing Skrein's wife, Ann Best. Watch the star-studded trailer above before the film hits theaters on Nov. 8.

‘A Night at Switch n’ Play’ Film Review: Transgressive Drag Outshines Pedestrian Doc Direction

  • The Wrap
A subversive property fully integrated into mainstream consciousness, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has popularized the inherently defiant, shape-shifting art of drag even among audiences outside of the Lgbtq community. Though its legacy of visibility is undeniable, it’s also true that it’s sanitized drag for basic cable. Hitting such a level of exposure was bound to limit its audacity.

In 2006, three years before the first episode of that VH1 show aired, the Switch n’ Play drag collective was established in Brooklyn to provide queer artists a welcoming platform to engage with their gender identities through performance. Clocking in at just a few minutes over an hour, director Cody Stickels’ proficient documentary, “A Night at Switch n’ Play,” harnesses a typical evening at the Branded Saloon in Prospect Heights, where the group regularly puts on their show, as a framing device for an introduction to each of its members.

Cannes: Dante Lam’s ‘The Rescue’ to be Handled by China Modern
China Modern Film and Television Development (Hk) is to handle international sales of “The Rescue.” The film is a big-budget Chinese action thriller, by smash hit director Dante Lam with the bankable Eddie Peng in the lead role.

The Hong Kong-based company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Modern Film and Television Development, one of the producers of the $90 million picture. It will represent the film for most international territories. At FilMart in March it was announced that Hong Kong studio Emperor Motion Pictures would be handling distribution in selected territories in Asia.

Now in the final stages of production, the film is a spectacular feast of action – without prominent guns or martial arts – featuring China’s Coast Guard Services in airborne, marine and mountain rescues. Locations included China and Baja, Mexico. The film is set for release at Chinese New Year season in early 2020.

Black Summer Trailer: Netflix Zombie Apocalypse TV Series

Joseph Baxter Mar 18, 2019

Netflix is getting into the zombie apocalypse TV genre with Black Summer, a more serious offering from the makers of Z Nation.

Black Summer is coming to Netflix, offering a more dramatic and intense take on the zombie apocalypse genre; an idea seemingly contradictory to series production company The Asylum, which was responsible for Syfy’s schlocky serial take on the genre, Z Nation, which was recently canceled after five seasons. Yet, with the genre still spear-headed by AMC’s ratings-declining (but still potent) The Walking Dead, the onus on this new series will be to prove that zombies aren’t passé.

Indeed, Black Summer is the creation of Z Nation co-creator/executive producer Karl Schaefer and the Syfy show's co-executive producer, John Hyams, with both serving as showrunners and writers. The project was given a straight-to-series order for eight episodes back in July 2018.

Ben Affleck’s Action Star Evolution in 10 Movies, From ‘Dazed and Confused’ to ‘Triple Frontier’

Ben Affleck’s Action Star Evolution in 10 Movies, From ‘Dazed and Confused’ to ‘Triple Frontier’
Ben Affleck takes center stage in Netflix’s upcoming “Triple Frontier,” and the pic is far from Affleck’s first as an established leading man action star. However, it took him a few films to get his bona fides, going from comedic side character to gruff hero with several stages of evolution along the way.

In his newest film, Affleck, looking his most rugged yet, plays a military veteran who orchestrates a mission with four other vets to rob a South American drug lord.

Below are 10 movies that showcase Affleck’s metamorphosis.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Richard Linklater’s indie comedy features many before-they-were-famous stars in minor roles. Most remember Matthew McConaughey’s meme spawning “alright, alright, alright” performance, but lose a boyish Affleck in the mix of other future stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Parker Posey, Milla Jovovich, and Renee Zellweger.

Mallrats (1995)

Affleck jumped from one prolific independent comedy director

On the TV side, the long-awaited second half of season 5 of the Emmy-winning comedy series “Arrested Development” starts to stream as does season 3 of the Drew Barrymore/Timothy Olyphant laffer “Santa Clarita Diet.” And among a slew of comedy specials are ones featuring Amy Schumer and British funnyman Jimmy Carr.

SpongeBob Spinoffs: Which Characters Can Carry Their Own Show?

Nick Harley Feb 14, 2019

Nickelodeon is working on spinoffs for some of Bikini Bottom's favorite citizens.

Ah, 20 years of SpongeBob SquarePants. It seems like just yesterday that we were watching our absorbent, yellow and porous friend answer a help wanted ad at the Krusty Krab. 244 episodes later, SpongeBob and his friends have become a pop culture phenomenon, spawning films, albums, every single piece of merchandise you can imagine, and an oddly persistent Super Bowl petition form. Nickelodeon has some Wumbo plans to celebrate our friend who lives in a pineapple under the sea, and it looks like some of the other constituents of Bikini Bottom will be receiving anniversary presents too.

In a press release from Nickelodeon, it’s been revealed that new spinoffs for some of SpongeBob’s supporting characters are in development for the first time ever.

“Nick is commemorating the 20th anniversary with the “Best Year Ever,” a

Dante Lam Flies to ‘The Rescue’ With China’s Biggest Action Project (Exclusive)

  • Variety
Dante Lam Flies to ‘The Rescue’ With China’s Biggest Action Project (Exclusive)
Ace Hong Kong director Dante Lam has begun work on “The Rescue,” which is set to be the biggest-budget Chinese film made this year. The $90 million action-adventure picture has already claimed a coveted Chinese New Year release slot in 2020.

Lam was recently responsible for two of mainland China’s highest-grossing films: “Operation Mekong” and last year’s “Operation Red Sea,” which raked in a combined $750 million in their target home market. Both were drenched in blood and Chinese patriotism, which failed to connect with audiences overseas.

For the long-gestating “Rescue,” Lam – whose track record includes upscale Hong Kong thrillers “The Viral Factor” and “The Stool Pigeon,” as well as sports dramas “Unbeatable” and “To the Fore” – has changed direction again. “There are no guns or martial-arts things,” he told Variety. “‘The Rescue’ is focused on courage, which I show through action. This has the energy of song and dance, or

Can Warren finally win? Her toughest threat is actually an artist she was previously nominated with: Lady Gaga. (Check out the complete list of nominees here.)

Warren and Gaga were nominated together for co-writing “Til it Happens to You” from the documentary “The Hunting Ground” (2015) about the epidemic of sexual assaults on college campuses. Unsettling New Trailer for the Supernatural Child Horror Thriller The Prodigy

“Mommy… will you always love me, no matter what I do?”

Orion Pictures has released a creepy new trailer for their upcoming horror thriller The Prodigy. It looks like it could end up being a decent horror flick!

The movie stars Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), and she takes on the role of Sarah, a mother whose gifted young son Miles is possessed by some kind of evil supernatural force. As you might expect, that leads to some disturbing behavior.

“Fearing for her family’s safety, Sarah must grapple with her maternal instinct to love and protect Miles in favor of investigating what – or who – is causing his dark turn. She is forced to look for answers in the past, taking the audience on a wild ride; one where the line between perception and reality remains blurry.”
