Storyline

Set against the picturesque landscape of the Mississippi Delta in the 1940's, "The Rising Place" follows the close friendship of two young women, each of a different race, and their struggle to find purpose in their lives during this time of social injustice and world war. When Virginia visits her Aunt Millie at Christmas, she discovers a stack of handwritten letters over half a century old, and unlocks the story of her aunt's youthful days as a young woman living in Hamilton, Mississippi, during the second World War. Beautifully shot sequences episodically shift back and forth from the past to the present. In a time when a woman's place was in the home, young Emily ventures out and falls in love with a young soldier, eventually carrying his baby out of wedlock. With the support of her best friend Wilma Watson and their draft-dodging companion Will Bacon, Emily is able to stand by her convictions in a household dominated by the standards of a salt-of-the-earth father and an ... Great Movie!
28 May 2006 | by MovieLover9898See all my reviews

I've seen this movie 6 times and I love it. The cast is great and the story explores all kinds of different issues. Worth seeing! The music is very good. The story is about issues that are still relevant today. The photography is beautiful. There is one moment where a plane sweeps by the camera that is breathtaking. It was a treat to watch. There were parts of the movie that were slow here and there but the pacing of the movie helped me to relax and enjoy it all the more.

The set and costumes were convincing and I really felt for the characters at the end. I think the movie makes some really good points about relationships and loving others. There were some very poignant moments that I appreciated. I don't want to talk too much about the plot - I myself like to go into a movie knowing as little as possible. But I do think that you'll enjoy this and hope you do.
