Trivia

The film is based on the diaries, reminisces and testimonies of Helen Colijn and Betty Jeffrey as described in their books, "Song of Survival" and "White Coolies". See more »

Goofs

Given that each of the women wore a single dress, day in and day out, in a tropical climate for three years straight, the fabric of their clothing would have disintegrated long before that was finally depicted in the film. Also, there's no way that the nuns would have been able to keep the white elements of their habits white, especially given the scarcity of soap. See more »

Quotes

Topsy Merritt: If I ever get out of this, I'll never say a word against New Jersey.
Rosemary Leighton-Jones: You'll never get out of this. None of us will ever leave Sumatra.

Not what I expected...and more.
30 May 1999 | by beriesSee all my reviews

I happened upon this film on HBO while flipping channels. I became engrossed at the point where the women were taken to the internment camp. I had no interest whatsoever to see this film in the theaters because the subject matter seemed too depressing (and it is!), but it is so well acted and such an intense story, that I would highly recommend it.
