‘Hala’ Film Review: Pakistani-American Teenager Comes of Age, Torn Between 2 Cultures
For every generation, there are one or two coming-of-age films that encompass what it means to be a teenager of that particular era. The ’80s had John Hughes, whereas the ’90s offered “Clueless,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “Empire Records,” and “Now and Then,” among many others.

While this is a genre that includes plenty of titles, it’s still rare that a coming-of-age film focuses on a young woman of color, particularly one who is also a child of immigrants. Writer-director Minhal Baig brings this very specific narrative to life with tenderness and care in “Hala.”

The film opens with a Muslim prayer, and within seconds the camera is focused on Hala quietly masturbating in the bathtub, interrupted by her mother, Eram (Purbi Joshi), loudly knocking on the door, asking in Urdu why Hala is taking so long in the bath. Hala stares ahead, unanswering, annoyed and slightly frustrated.

There’s a long history of coming-of-age films featuring disparate stories and ensemble casts, creating a microcosm of the world during that time. Perhaps the most successful film in this subgenre is Richard Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused.” But there are other examples like “Empire Records” and “Can’t Hardly Wait.” Now, “Summer Night” aims to sit beside those films, except with a focus on a new generation.

We Could See Titanic and Clueless Themed Episodes of The Goldbergs Spinoff Schooled

The Goldbergs is a fantasically funny show, with the best stories, jam-packed with nostalgia and ‘80s goodness all based on the life of creator Adam F. Goldberg. Now the spinoff, Schooled, is based on the character Laney Lewis, played by Aj Michalka, who was the best friend and girlfriend of two of the Goldberg teens. Lewis has fast-forwarded into the ‘90s where she is a high school teacher at William Penn Academy, with Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows), and some of our other favorite teachers from The Goldbergs in tow.

Each episode of The Goldbergs is based around a movie, show, event, album, or something pop-culture centered in the ‘80s. And it looks like Schooled has followed suit. This week’s episode was based on the Broadway musical Rent. As the show is just starting, it’s fun to think of all the awesome 9’0s themes they can run with in upcoming episodes of the series,

The Exact Year That Captain Marvel is Set in Has Been Revealed; What Were You Doing in 1995?

We’ve know that Captain Marvel will be set in the 90s. The Blockbuster Video store featured in the the trailer made sure we understand that. But, we’ve never been given an exact date until now.

According to Disney’s Japanese website, Carol Danvers will be "descending from the sky" in 1995.

That was a great year of movies that included Toy Story, Seven, Heat, Braveheart, Clueless, Apollo 13, The Usual Suspects, Bad Boys, Bill Madison, Golden Eye, 12 Monkeys, Babe, Empire Records, Jumanji, Die Hard With A Vengeance, Get Shorty, and more.

I was a sophomore in high school in 1995. I was spending a lot of time at the movies with my friends and shooting lots of short films with them. Going to Blockbuster every Friday night was a ritual. I spent a lot of time at the beach during those days and was hanging out in Hollywood a lot for some reason.

‘Empire Records’: Ethan Embry Reveals the Sad, Poignant Reason Why Rex Manning Day Is April 8

‘Empire Records’: Ethan Embry Reveals the Sad, Poignant Reason Why Rex Manning Day Is April 8
It’s April 8, which holds special significance for fans of “Empire Records”: Today is Rex Manning Day. That exciting anniversary, which comes shortly after the news that the 1995 cult classic is being revived as a Broadway musical, is being celebrated online with the usual barrage of gifs and memes; courtesy of one of the film’s stars, it’s also being marked with some sad, poignant trivia.

“The reason we picked April 8th as the day to have the powdered/coifed Rex Manning visit Empire is because Kurt was found on the 8th of April, the day the music of the 90s lost its mascot,” Ethan Embry tweeted. He’s referring to the fact that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead on April 8, 1994, less than a year and a half before “Empire Records” was released.

Set in the eponymous record store (remember those?), the film was a critical and commercial failure upon release.

‘Empire Records’ to Become Broadway-Bound Musical – Just in Time for Rex Manning Day

Just in time for Rex Manning Day on Sunday, producer Bill Weiner announced plans to develop a stage musical based on the 1995 film “Empire Records.” Did you think we would all just fade away?

Original screenwriter Carol Heikkinen (“Center Stage”) will write the stage adaptation, with new music and lyrics by Zoe Sarnak, the 2018 Jonathan Larson Grant winner for her upcoming musical “Afterwords.” Other members of the creative team will be announced at a later date.

Director Allan Moyle’s teen comedy, which starred Liv Tyler, Renée Zellweger, Anthony Lapaglia, Robin Tunney, Rory Cochrane, Ethan Embry and Johnny Whitworth, has developed a cult following over the years for its depiction of mid-’90s alt-rock fandom.

The film was set at Empire Records, last of the independent small-town record stores, as its tight-knit teenage employees gear up for a promotional event for washed-up music star Rex Manning (Maxwell Caulfield).

Hearing that the shop may be sold to a big chain, slacker employee Lucas (Cochrane) places a big bet with a chunk of the store’s money, hoping to get a big return and save the store. When the plan fails, Empire Records falls into serious trouble, and the teens must find a way to fend off the encroaching Music Town overlords.

“The movie was really about a family that formed among these minimum-wage record clerks,” Heikkinen said in a statement. “There’s a lot of nostalgia now for those old record stores where you could go and talk to people who loved the same music you loved, and discover new bands. We hope the musical will capture the memory of what it was like to be young in a time before iTunes and Spotify — music is such an important part of the youth experience, and it’s what brings these characters together.”

Sarnak added, “I first saw ‘Empire Records’ when my older sister brought it home on VHS…. Over the years, I watched it again and again because that cast — those characters — were my idea of the coolest misfits. Teenagers who loved music as much as I did, and still do.”

Weiner, who jump-started New Regency’s theatrical stage business and served as the studio’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel for 23 years, said: “I am beyond thrilled to bring this iconic film to the Broadway stage.”

Great Job, Internet!: Damn the man!: Let’s check in on the cast of Empire Records

Whether or not it “does a disservice to 1995 and record-store culture,” Empire Records captured the zeitgeist with its pairing of cute, energized teen weirdos and ‘90s alt-rock. Its perfectly cast ensemble is responsible for much of the movie’s appeal, so much so that a good chunk of them went on to find much larger success in the entertainment industry.

This new video from Looper checks in on each of the core cast members (including Warren!), revealing some stuff we already know (Renee Zellweger got really, really famous) and some you probably didn‘t (um, 24-year old Coyote Shivers’ was Liv Tyler’s stepdad?).

As with most modern actors, the majority of the cast went on to find success on TV, with the likes of Rory Cochrane, Robin Tunney, and Johnny Whitworth all staking a claim on network and cable shows. What the video fails to mention, however, is ...
