22 Emmy Nominees Worth Considering One More Time Before Voting Ends

  • Indiewire
The marathon is almost over. What started in February with the first official Fyc screenings is about to wrap up on the final day of Emmy voting. All the advocacy from publicists, networks, critics, friends, and colleagues will either add up to an Emmy win or not, and the mourning cycle will last, at most, one month — before the end-of-year awards races start up in earnest.

So today, on the last day of voting, IndieWire TV Critic Ben Travers and TV Awards Editor Libby Hill have a few last-second pleas for everyone to consider. Sure, it would be nice if someone clicked on this article and then clicked over to their ballot, convinced of a nominee’s merit. But it’s just as important that we all remember the impressive efforts of these creators. Whether they win or not, the work demands to be seen, and the long Emmy race

Emmys: How Fresh Faces Could Cause Upsets in Major Races

Emmys: How Fresh Faces Could Cause Upsets in Major Races
The breadth of first-time acting Emmy nominees on the ballot this year — from Jodie Comer (BBC America’s “Killing Eve”) to Benicio Del Toro (Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora”) to Stellan Skarsgård (HBO’s “Chernobyl”) — marks an awards season with a notably wide-open playing field. In an era of peak TV, the number of scripted series being produced — and the diversity of stories being told — means that new faces and longtime veterans alike are being recognized with their first nominations.

“There have never been as many original programs as there are now,” says awards consultant Richard Licata of Licata & Co. “So, de facto, there are more actors in them, and more first-timers who have emerged, which is very exciting for the business.”

And, he continues, the volume of “first-time front-runners may be favored this year by Academy voters.” But he thinks that is due to the “great performances,” not “the

After over 230 acting credits, Stephen Root is primed for his first Emmy nomination thanks to ‘Barry’

After over 230 acting credits, Stephen Root is primed for his first Emmy nomination thanks to ‘Barry’
Did you know that Stephen Root, an actor with over 230 credits on his resume, has never received an Emmy nomination? Surprising, I know. But the guy who starred in “NewsRadio” and “King of the Hill” and made countless guest appearances in a slew of other TV favorites (not to mention more than a few movies) has been unrecognized in the awards game thus far. That could change this year with a primo season of “Barry” that has put his performance squarely in the spotlight.

See Emmy spotlight: ‘Barry’ exceeds its strong debut with a killer Season 2

The second year of HBO’s comedy series finds hitman-turned-thespian Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) dealing with the repercussions of murdering Detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome), who was investigating his nefarious behavior while dating his acting coach, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). Complications arise in his relationship with Monroe Fuches (Root), a family friend who trained

Will ‘Barry’ supporting stars Anthony Carrigan, Stephen Root and Sarah Goldberg share the Emmy spotlight?

Will ‘Barry’ supporting stars Anthony Carrigan, Stephen Root and Sarah Goldberg share the Emmy spotlight?
“Barry” had a great first season at the Emmys. In 2018 it earned 13 nominations and 3 wins, including Best Comedy Actor (Bill Hader) and Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Henry Winkler). But Winkler was the only supporting star who was even nominated. Will his co-stars Anthony Carrigan, Stephen Root and Sarah Goldberg get to share the spotlight in season two? It’s actually quite common for a show to blow up in the supporting categories after first-year snubs.

Even some of the Emmys’ favorite shows didn’t sweep the supporting categories right away. “Sex and the City” scene-stealer Kim Cattrall had to wait until season two for her first nomination, while Cynthia Nixon had to wait until season four and Kristin Davis didn’t get hers until the sixth and final year. “The Office” didn’t get any supporting nominations until its third season in 2007, the year after it won Best Comedy Series.

Emmys: Will Anthony Bourdain Win Posthumously?

Emmys: Will Anthony Bourdain Win Posthumously?
This year, Emmy voters paid respects to Anthony Bourdain, who committed suicide on June 8, with six nominations for his CNN series “Parts Unknown,” and another for its digital expansion. But whether these accolades end up in the win column as well remains to be seen. If history is any judge, the Academy delivers a mixed bag on posthumous trophies, with sentimentality playing an uneven role.

“The Emmys are quirky,” says awards consultant Jonathan Taylor of Robertson Taylor Partners. “With peak TV there [are] so many shows that anybody who says they know how voters are going to vote is lying.”

Ingrid Bergman won her Emmy for “A Woman Called Golda” in 1982, a month after she died of breast cancer. Audrey Hepburn earned hers in 1993, several months after her death, for “Gardens of the World.” Raul Julia died in 1994, but earned a trophy the next year for “The Burning Season.”

How ‘Atlanta,’ ‘Black-ish,’ ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Defy Traditional Comedy Story Structure

How ‘Atlanta,’ ‘Black-ish,’ ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Defy Traditional Comedy Story Structure
One big takeaway from this year’s crop of Emmy nominees in the comedy series category is it pays to break the mold — including your own.

Three nominated series executed daring stylistic departures from their established status quos: “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” savagely sent up true-crime documentaries with “Party Monster: Scratching the Surface,” delving into the history of DJ-turned-kidnapper/would-be cult leader the Reverend (Jon Hamm); the “Black-ish” episode “Juneteenth” adopted the Broadway musical “Hamilton’s” brand of historical enlightenment; and “Atlanta,” which has made unconventional narrative styles a signature, delivered the disturbingly creepy/funny horror pastiche “Teddy Perkins” and the poignant all-childhood flashback episode “Fubu.”

Another contender, “Glow,” didn’t defy format in its nominated season, but recent second season entry “The Good Twin” played as a complete episode of the fictional cheap-and-cheesy ’80s wrestling series the show’s characters star in.

Atlanta” executive producer Stephen Glover, who wrote the “Fubu” episode,

Why Macaulay Culkin Turned Down The Big Bang Theory 3 Times
Macaulay Culkin could have been one of the biggest TV stars today—and even Ri¢hie Ri¢h-er. The 37-year-old former child movie star, who rose to fame in 1990 after playing Kevin in Home Alone, revealed on Joe Rogan's Joe Rogan Experience podcast this week that he was offered a part on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory before the TV show premiered in 2007. The show's concept did not appeal to him at all. "I couldn't see myself doing a sitcom or a television show kind of thing. A good one, I'd do. Like, NewsRadio is a fantastic show," Culkin said, referring to the '90s sitcom that first made Rogan famous. "That must've been a...

Ellen Burstyn, James Caan to Star in Romantic Comedy ‘Welcome to Pine Grove!’
Ellen Burstyn and James Caan are starring in the romantic comedy “Welcome to Pine Grove!” with shooting expected to begin later this summer.

Astute Films is the production company. Producers are Harrison Powell, Dominique Telson, and Fred Bernstein. Executive producers are Rick Jackson and Claudine Marrotte.

Burstyn will play a widow who moves into the Pine Grove Senior Community and discovers it’s just like high school, full of cliques and flirtatious suitors. Caan plays the hot new guy at Pine Grove and Burstyn’s love interest.

Donald Martin wrote the screenplay based on a story by Powell, which was inspired by his grandmother’s own experience of moving into a retirement community.

“’Welcome to Pine Grove!’ is ‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘Golden Girls’ in a senior community,” said Powell. “We wanted to make a film that inspires others because it is never too late to make friends, to laugh, to dance,

Could Miguel Ferrer earn a posthumous Emmy nomination for ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’?

Could Miguel Ferrer earn a posthumous Emmy nomination for ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’?
Could Miguel Ferrer become a posthumous Emmy nominee for “Twin Peaks: The Return”? The veteran character actor died of throat cancer in January 2017 after he shot the Showtime revival, in which he reprised his role as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfield. The TV academy often rewards stars who have died with nominations for their final performances, so could Ferrer compete for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor? Despite a long list of TV credits including “The Stand” (1994), “Crossing Jordan” (2001-2007), “NCIS: Los Angeles” (2012-2017) and many more, he never earned an Emmy nomination during his lifetime.

Ferrer first appeared in the original “Twin Peaks” in a recurring role as an abrasive and sarcastic FBI forensics specialist assisting Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in his murder investigation in the title town. And he also appeared in the 1992 prequel film “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.” The 18-episode limited run in 2017 found him

Which Comedians Have the Best Post-‘Saturday Night Live’ TV Careers? — IndieWire Critics Survey

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: Which “Saturday Night Live” alum has the best post-“SNL” television career?

Soraya Nadia McDonald (@SorayaMcDonald), The Undefeated

It’s gotta be Tina Fey, right? So many “SNL” alums have attempted to make the jump to movies, with varying degrees of success. Poor Chris Kattan. But Tina Fey really has a way with television (“30 Rock,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Great News”) that trumps her film career. And I think it’s because Tina’s an excellent writer and television is still such a writers’ medium. She really seems like a natural at showrunning and she has a partner she clearly trusts in Robert Carlock. But I

Via The Hollywood Reporter.

The Hollywood Reporter was not able to reach any of the alleged victims, however, two sources detailed Dick’s inappropriate behavior, which included groping people’s genitals, unwanted kissing/licking and sexual propositions of at least four members of the production.

Saxton will play Simon, who is described as “Intelligent and odd, Simon makes his way through life ignored by the world at large. Alternately tormented and shunned by his roommates, Simon has just as much trouble connecting with the other misfits he meets at community service.” Foley is set to portray Bernie, “a disheveled driver (think Uber), he’s clumsy, dorky and wearing clothes from 1990. Everything about this guy screams ‘desperate’”.
