Through it all, Grace is able to help a young mother realize that time is the most valuable gift she could give to her daughter.
The Christmas Story Lady is about a woman named Grace whose daughter has her move in with herself and her husband in New York City because she has been living in a dumpy neighborhood. Grace's daughter tries to persuade her mother to become her involved with retirement groups but to no avail. Grace tries to volunteer in the community but no one will take her. One day, she watches some television and is fascinated with a certain channel that ends up being public-access television. After her son-in-law's explanation about it, Grace decides to read a story (which she loved to do when her own daughter was a child)on public-access television each week for which she pays about $50. The young man who works for the studio likes her story telling and adds some finishing touches to her program. Her weekly program is loved dearly by school children and a single woman raising her daughter discover's Grace's talent. This woman works for a children's company and has been pressured to come up with something profitable for them before January 1st. Grace is offered a television contract and begins to tape programs for them, reading her stories to children. However, when the television producers try and force her to have her teeth removed for dentures because the presentation (her mouth) would be more to their liking, Grace resists. The producers tell her she must comply since she has signed a contract with them and it is under a particular section in her contract to which she must submit. Her son-in-law promises to hire a lawyer to get her out of the contract but Grace takes things into her own hands. The contract also has a moral clause stating that if she does anything deemed immoral by the company, she will be released by them. On Christmas Eve, Grace shoplifts jewellery, a scarf and anything else she can get her hands on that can be seen in front of the store camera. Caught by the authorities and televised on the evening news, Grace lands before a judge to whom she tells him why she shoplifted. After giving the judge some tips on how to tell a good story to his daughter, they enter the courtroom. With her daughter and son-in-law and a host of beloved friends, all who have brought their lawyers, the judge sentences Grace to two years of community service at a local library where she must read stories to children. A sub-theme of the movie circles around the single career woman and her daughter whom Grace befriends. This is an absolutely heart-warming film.
