There is a war reference in each of the first three Die Hard films. This film's references include Marvin mentioning both Iwo Jima and Pearl Harbor and the Commando team reminiscing about Grenada. See more »
The mercenaries "plan" was to use the distraction of potentially dozens of civilian flights being endangered to cover their escape plans for the dictator. This is patently ridiculous as there are dozens of airfields of varying sizes within a 50-mile radius of Washington DC, including two major USAF airfields..
Additionally, for larger aircraft, Baltimore, Richmond,VA and Philadelphia are all within easy diversion range as if Dover AFB in Delaware which is a major military transport installation. If the aircraft couldn't land at Dulles, there are numerous other options, rendering the mercenaries plans irrelevant. I'll make you a deal, Marvin. You show me a shortcut out to those runways and I'll get you a liner for that coat.

The US broadcast version changed the famous "Yippee-kay-aye, motherfucker!" line at the end (where Bruce Willis throws the lighter onto the trail of fuel to blow up the plane) to say "Yippee-kay-aye, Mr. Falcon!" In order for this "Mr. Falcon" line to make sense, the scene with the soldiers in the plane is also changed so that one of the soldiers calls one of the two main bad guys "Mr. Falcon." This likely refers to Esperanza, given that "Falcon" is the codename used by Esperanza when Colonel Stuart (codename "Eagle Nest") is guiding Esperanza down to the runway. See more »
Bruce Willis returns as John McClane who this time faces off against mercenaries who have taken over an airport and are threatening to have all the plane crashes, McClane's wife Holly(Bonnie Bedelia) is on one such plane and so it's McClane back in action as he ponders how the same thing can happen to the same guy twice. Die Hard 2 to tell you the truth was a mixed bag. On one hand it had lots of action and a brutal edge to the action but also lacks the suspense of the first. In either case though Die Hard 2 is not bad as sequels go. Indeed even though it's directed by Renny Harlin, Die Hard 2 works in-spite of itself. The only flaw is that the movie is feels too much like a carbon copy of the first film only with a bigger is better approach to the stunts. That being said this is a minor flaw to behold and one really doesn't understand the mixed reaction to this film, when the movie is overall very entertaining.
