A black widower and his five children make new lives for themselves in California.
Black blue-collar worker Mike Harris moves with his five children--David, Tommy, J.P., Liz and Richard--from Detroit to Los Angeles after the death of his wife to begin brand new lives. In L.A., Mike joins Harry, a white man, in opening a garage, and struggles to raise a family as a single parent in a lower-middle-class neighborhood.
