Bruce Lee’s daughter tells Quentin Tarantino to “shut up” about her father’s portrayal in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Shannon Lee, the daughter of Bruce Lee, has told Quentin Tarantino to “shut up” or apologise for her father’s portrayal in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Quentin Tarantino films are often controversial but not many would have guessed the major talk about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would be its depiction of icon Bruce Lee. In the film, Lee is portrayed as rather arrogant and unlikeable and this has rubbed some people the wrong way, including Lee’s daughter Shannon.

Tarantino has declined to apologise, saying that he felt the portrayal of Lee was accurate. Now, Variety has spoken to Shannon Lee about how Tarantino could fix the issue and she has had some strong words for the legendary director in response:

“He could shut up about it. That would be really nice. Or he could apologize or he could say, ‘I don’t really know what Bruce Lee was like.

Quentin Tarantino defends his depiction of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Quentin Tarantino has defended his portrayal of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, after Shannon Lee, Lee’s daughter, criticised the depiction of her father calling it “disheartening” and “uncomfortable” as the martial arts icon “comes across as an arrogant asshole.”

In a recent report from The Wrap, a new video shows the director speaking to reporters in Moscow, where he claims his portrayal of Lee is fair.

“Bruce Lee was kind of an arrogant guy,” Tarantino said. “The way he was talking, I didn’t just make a lot of that up. I heard him say things like that to that effect.”

During the film, Brad Pitt’s stuntman character, Cliff Booth, trades insults with Bruce Lee, played by Mike Moh. However, at one point, Lee states he could beat Muhammad Ali. This exchange ends up in a two-out-of-three rounds fight which concludes in a stalemate.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor Mike Moh weighs in on Bruce Lee controversy

Earlier this month, Bruce Lee’s daughter Shannon Lee spoke of her unhappiness over her father’s portrayal in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, stating that the martial arts icon “comes across as an arrogant asshole” during his scenes in the film, which include a fight scene with Brad Pitt’s character Cliff Booth that ultimately ends up in a stalemate.

It’s previously been revealed that Tarantino originally wanted Cliff to come out on top in the fight, only for several people – including Pitt – to voice their concerns and convince Tarantino to change things up. Nevertheless, these changes weren’t enough to quell the controversy completely, and now actor Mike Moh, who portrays Lee in the movie, has offered his thoughts on the situation during an interview with Birth Movies Death.

“I’m not going to tell you what the original script had exactly, but when I read it,

Bruce Lee’s daughter unhappy with his portrayal in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Shannon Lee, daughter of the iconic Bruce Lee, has criticised the portrayal of her father in Quentin Tarantino’s new film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, stating that she found the experience of watching the movie “uncomfortable”.

“He comes across as an arrogant asshole who was full of hot air, and not someone who had to fight triple as hard as any of those people did to accomplish what was naturally given to so many others,” said Lee. “It was really uncomfortable to sit in the theatre and listen to people laugh at my father. Here, he’s the one with all the puffery and he’s the one challenging Brad Pitt. Which is not how he was”

“I can understand all the reasoning behind what is portrayed in the movie,” she continued. “I understand that the two characters are antiheroes and this is sort of like a rage fantasy of what would happen…

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scores the biggest box office opening of Tarantino’s career

While it didn’t manage to dethrone Disney’s The Lion King from the top of the box office, Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has delivered the biggest opening of the filmmaker’s career in North America this weekend.

The R-rated film, which is set in 1969 and features a cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, debuted in second place at the box office with $40 million across the Friday to Sunday period.

That puts Once Upon a Time… ahead of Tarantino’s previous best opening of $38 million for Inglorious Basterds, and is some $10 million up on original tracking estimates.

Basterds went on to make $321 million worldwide, while Tarantino’s biggest hit to date is Django Unchained which earned $425 million around the globe.

Quentin Tarantino says he’s written Once Upon a Time in Hollywood spinoff series Bounty Law

Although Quentin Tarantino appears to be coming towards the end of his career as a filmmaker, the director intending on calling it a day after 10 movies, it seems he plans on filling his time with a variety of non-feature film projects, including a potential TV series spin off from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Speaking to Deadline, Tarantino has revealed that he’s written five episodes for Bounty Law, a 50s-style Western series which – in the world of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – made a star out of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Rick Dalton.

“From watching the different old Western shows and everything, I did it to get in the head of Bounty Law,” said Tarantino. “I ended up starting to really like the idea of Jake Cahill, as a character. I really started loving those half hour ’50s Western scripts. The idea that you could write something like 24 minutes,

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood tracking $30 million opening

Three weeks out from its release and the official tracking figures are now in for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Variety reporting that Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film is tracking a domestic opening weekend of between $28 million to $30 million.

Some predictions have gone as high as $50 million, although most analysts expect the film to fall short of the likes of Inglourious Basterds ($38 million) and Django Unchained ($30.1 million) but enjoy a lengthy run into August against blockbuster competition like The Lion King and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

Sony has reportedly pumped $90 million into Once Upon a Time in Hollywood before advertising, so the studio will certainly be hoping that is the case. If the rave reviews coming out of Cannes are any indication, executives will surely be feeling confident.

Quentin Tarantino may extend Once Upon a Time in Hollywood following Cannes premiere

Quentin Tarantino has been in Cannes this past week to premiere his new movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the film receiving a standing ovation at its screening and drawing reactions which praised the film as “terrific” and “shocking”.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood still doesn’t open for another couple of months, and it seems that the version we get in theaters may end up being different from the one shown at Cannes, with Tarantino revealing to IndieWire (via Dark Horizons) that he’s considering a return to the edit bay to extend the movie.

“I may make it longer,” said Tarantino. “I wouldn’t take anything else out. I’m going to explore possibly putting something back in. If anything, I wanted to go to Cannes too short. if I’m going to err, I’m going to err on too tight.”
