Drive-In Dust Offs: Night Of The Cobra Woman (1972)

Drive-In Dust Offs: Night Of The Cobra Woman (1972)
Who brings fear and passion into the heart of the Philippine jungle, striking with terror and hot, venomous lust? Why it’s the Cobra Woman of course, and in Night of the Cobra Woman (1972) she does just that, in a cheap, exploitation-filled frenzy of snakes, breasts, and incoherence. I’m afraid to say you won’t even win the small stuffed bear if you guessed that Roger Corman brought this to the screen.

Released by Corman’s nascent New World Pictures in January as part of a bill with Lady Frankenstein, Cobra was the perfect fit for the bottom half of a double header; short (77 minutes) and very weird, it offers up exploitation goodness as sweaty as the jungle itself.

Mr. Corman was as usual, busy busy busy, and when one has a location as visually sumptuous as the Philippines, one milks it for all its worth. The Big Doll House,

From Caged to Orange Is the New Black: A Brief History of Incarcerated Women on Screen
Orange Is the New Black returns June 17. The show has rightly earned praise for its nuanced, moving portrayals of female inmates of all stripes, and serves as a reminder of how far things have come in terms of images of incarcerated women on screen. In appreciation of series creator Jenji Kohan and the cast and crew's elevated take on the subject matter, we're looking back at the bleak and often exploitative history of the strange "women's prison drama" film genre. The portrayal of women in prison can be split - as most of Hollywood can - into two periods: Pre- and Post-Code.

Sliff Interview: Stace England of Screen Syndicate – A Tribute to Roberta Collins

Screen Syndicate, a side project of Southern Illinois-based Americana band Stace England and the Salt Kings, explores the fascinating history of Roger Corman’s New World Pictures and the exploitation films made by the company in the 1970s. The life of actress Roberta Collins — a Hollywood story of sadly unfulfilled promise — is the vehicle used to navigate the period. Collins lit up the screen in films like The Big Doll House, Women In Cages and Death Race 2000. But Collins was unable to break out of the B-movie grind, playing minor roles in increasingly poor productions before finally exiting the business. She died in obscurity in 2008. Screen Syndicate combines original songs, film clips, trailers, and other material into a unique live-music experience that pays tribute to Collins. The band has performed at numerous film festivals in the U.S. and Europe — appearing twice at Sliff — with shows about pioneering African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and Cairo,

Wow! You’re probably

Exclusive Contest: Write a Catchline for Roger Corman!

Walk in the footsteps of giants; help Roger with his new movie!

Roger sent over the preliminary art for his upcoming Attack Of The 50 Foot Cheerleader and is asking Trailers from Hell fans to come up with a suggested ad copy line, preferably one with sexual innuendo – funny, if possible. The film will be aired on Epix later this month. (See the poster below.)

I started out doing this kind of thing for Roger and it was always a lot of fun. Here are some classics from the New World Pictures era:

“A Howling Hellcat Humping a Hot Steel Hog on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge!”– Bury Me an Angel

“They Wanted Love. He Gave Them Terror and Death!” — Woman Hunt

“Wet Dreams and Open Jeans” — Street Girls

“They Don’t Need Clothes to Strike a Pose” — Cover Girl Models

“Only the Monster She Made Could Satisfy Her Strange Desires!

Pam Grier Gets A "Foxy" Biopic

Imprint Entertainment has optioned the film rights to actress Pam Grier’s autobiography "Foxy, My Life in Three Acts".

Grier was an iconic African American female sex symbol and action star in the 70′s, arguably the most recognisable name in the 'blaxploitation' genre. First appearing in a cameo in "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls", the actress made numerous films in the genre including "Foxy Brown," "Coffy" and "Women in Cages".

She's also been steadily employed in films and on TV over the past four decades including films and shows like "Jackie Brown," "Jawbreaker," "Escape from L.A.," "The L Word," "Ghosts of Mars," "Smallville" and "Larry Crowne".

The film's story follows Grier’s life both past and present - her relationships with the likes of Richard Pryor, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Freddie Prinze Sr.; nights out with John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, and Peter Lawford; and her ongoing battle with cancer.

Pam Grier: Queen of Horror and Exploitation (My Tribute to a Goddess!)

Pam Grier carries a seductive charm about her that somehow accentuates her lovely physical features, in a major, major way. While her prime days as a horror and exploitation staple have now faded, my love for the woman has not. Whether it be, Women in Cages, Scream, Blacula, Scream, Coffee, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Escape From L.A., or Ghosts of Mars, if the film includes Ms. Grier, Im absolutely mesmerized. She will, in my eyes, forev…

The Women In Cages Collection Blu-ray Review

No one knew exploitation cinema like Jack Hill. His resume is like a tour through sleazy '70s film history, and his collaborators like a who's who of the toughest, meanest, and sexiest stars of the era.  Shout! Factory's Women in Cages Blu-ray Collection is a magnificent monument to that legacy featuring Hill's Big Doll House and The Big Bird Cage as well as Gerry De Leon's Women in Cages to round it all out. These three films may not have been the first Women in Prison films, far from it, but they brought the goods like no other films before them.  If you wanted buxom broads with bad attitudes, you've got 'em in spades in this collection.  Mud wrestling, shower scenes, sexual torture, and more,...

DVD: DVD: The Women In Cages Collection (Blu-ray)

On “From Manila With Love,” a 45-minute making-of documentary included on the new Women In Cages Collection triple-feature set, legendary exploitation director Jack Hill (Spider Baby, Switchblade Sisters) rattles off the compulsory elements of a women-in-prison movie. At a minimum, Hill notes, it must have women showering, fighting in mud, and being tortured. Hosing scenes are optional. In the next breath, Hill likens these obligations to Shakespeare’s need to include swordfights and a comic-relief character in his plays to meet the audience’s expectations. Though comparing Shakespeare to foxy mud wrestlers is the cultural equivalent to a sudden drop ...

New on Blu-ray and DVD: Troll Hunter! Tracker! N.E.D.S!

Trollhunter - is one of those festival favourites that somehow slipped through the cracks here at Qe. Oh, we knew all about it, we just never caught a screening for review or promoted it for some reason. Chances are you've seen the amazing trailers from Magnet that have come out since the film was picked up for distro. Know though that this is a Norwegian film with subs and that it's supposed to be pretty stellar. Looking forward to finally watching it.

Blitz - is a UK cop/action flick starring Jason Statham. It's been getting middling reviews since it's release in the UK, some calling it out as being on par with a Mftv movie. Seems like one I'd check out if I was in the mood for some action though.

Roger Corman's Sword And Sorcery Collection - featuring Deathstalker, Deathstalker II, The Warrior And The Sorceress & Barbarian Queen.
