Storyline

Desirous of starting a family, the young Catholic housewife, Rosemary Woodhouse, and her struggling actor husband, Guy, move into the Bramford, New York's iconic building which brims with unpleasant stories of obscure dwellers and ghastly occurrences. Before long, the young couple is befriended by their elderly and somehow eccentric next-door neighbours, Roman and Minnie Castevet--and shortly after--Rosemary unexpectedly gets pregnant. However, little by little, as the inexperienced mother becomes systematically cut off from her circle and friends, alarming hints of a well-planned and sinister conspiracy will begin to emerge, enfolding Rosemary in a shroud of suspicion and mental agony. In the end, why is everyone so conveniently eager to help; furthermore, why is Guy allowing it? Written by Nick Riganas

Trivia

Towards the ending of Ira Levin's novel Roman and Rosemary argue about what the baby's name will be. He insists it should be Adrian Steven Castavet, she insists it should be Andrew Woodhouse. They argue and eventually Minnie sides with Rosemary. She and the rest of the coven then stand around Rosemary shouting "Hail Rosemary! Mother of Andrew! Hail Rosemary! Mother of Satan!" while Rosemary makes baby talk and plays with Andrew/Adrian in his crib. All of this was cut out of the movie. See more »

Alternate Versions

The film originally proved problematic for the UK censors and the rape scene was toned down by the BBFC for the cinema release with edits made to remove dialogue and shots of Rosemary's legs being bound. All later UK video releases featured the uncut print. See more »

Truly Creepy and Demonic
11 June 2000 | by MacabroSee all my reviews

This is definitely one of the best horror films ever made. The conspiracy that Rosemary goes throughout the film is truly creepy. What makes it so scary is that she goes trusting her husband and 'friends' without any idea of what really is happening to her. The rape scene is horrifying, very intense and at its best for the horror genre. "Rosemary's Baby" is a great horror film, there are no posessions, no gore, but the film is intense in content. It has power to make the audience nervous, tense and very scared. -********** A perfect 10.
