Trivia

Re-released in 1965 as "The End of the World" but only appeared as such in a few theaters, mostly in the Los Angeles area (Source: The American Film Institute Catalog of Motion Pictures). Was released under the original title thereafter. See more »

Goofs

One of the three would-be thieves is shot from the trailer window and is wounded in the shoulder. The long gun poking out the window and carried after the shooting by Frankie Avalon is a shotgun, but the sound of it firing is a rifle shot and only a single bullet hits the bad guy in the shoulder. A shotgun as shown would have blasted away most of his shoulder at that range. See more »

SURPRISINGLY EFFECTIVE...AND FRANKIE AVALON CAN ACT!
15 July 1999 | by Bob-45See all my reviews

Los Angeles family vacation is interrupted by nuclear war. Now they must escape into the mountains to avoid the radiation, the panic, and the rapists.

Despite the insipid nuclear holocaust effects (looks more like a thunderstorm), this is a surprisingly effective movie. Milland elicits effective performances from each and every member of his cast (Frankie Avalon has never been better). The menace, humiliation and sheer terror of rape has never been more poignantly depicted on the screen, and all without nudity. A minor classic.
