Angel Baby (1961)
Paul Strand: [Preaching to the crowd] We've all been breaking our appointments. You have been breaking your appointments and I have been breaking mine. We've been breaking our appointments with the dentist and with the doctor, but there's one appointment you're not gonna forget. That the appointment with God. Praise God! Now is the time to repent. Right now! Now is the time to receive Jesus in your heart. Break the chains of sins! Send the devil flying! Cleanse your soul of sin for the Lord tonight.
Sarah Strand: The Lord is the healer of the afflicted. If ye have faith, ye shall be cured.
Mollie Hays: [Overlooks Angel Baby sleeping] Look at the girl once more, Ben Hays. You still don't see nothing?
Ben Hays: [Looks at Angel Baby] Mol, she's just a Georgia country gal sleeping off the Lord's electricity.
Mollie Hays: I seen me a vision, so help me!
Ben Hays: Now what kind of omen did you see this time? It looked like a rat the size of a hound dog or did it look like an elephant?
Mollie Hays: I seen me a vision from God. A angel with white wings and fire on His tongue.
Ben Hays: Well, I declare!
Mollie Hays: A angel with white wings a hoverin' over that girl there like a big dragonfly over a quick and hot summer's day. Go feel it. Go on, feel it! There's a hotness there like the Lord drawed a circle, a holy circle, where the angels swarmed over her. It's a sign, Ben, that's what it is. A sign the Lord chose that girl for His holy work. I knows it!
Ben Hays: [Consoling her] It's all right. All right. You seen His sign. You seen His sign.
Mollie Hays: Don't be scared. Just say what's in your heart.
Angel Baby: [Practicing her first sermon at the podium] Yes. I was thinking how when we pray down on our knees, it appears to us that the Lord has to be summoned from a far place... that child-like fear... maybe the Lord can't get to us from afar, stays with us and we grow old with it 'til when we're withered and our hair's whited. And we think maybe, maybe we ain't important enough to bring Him rushing to us and we hear our own little thin voice and we say, "How's it gonna get to Him" To fetch him?" Well, I tell you the Lord is everywhere. You don't have to come rushing. He don't have to strain to hear even a whisper. He's everywhere and in everything. He's got His arms held around the Earth hugging us close to Him. His love is such, it can enfold every living creature, every flower, every tree, every man and every woman!
Sarah Strand: Lust! Lust! Lust! You, a man of God, fighting over a wanton woman like a filthy dog. And look at you, wild, with the craving of a patent siren.
Paul Strand: She's an honest, normal, God-fearing woman.
Sarah Strand: She's a slut!
Sam Wilcox: Angel Baby. I declare you as the sweetest, juiciest peach in the whole state of Georgia.
Angel Baby: [Looking at a dress he gave her] Sam, it's very pretty, but I don't think it's fittin' and proper for me to preach in it.
Sam Wilcox: What's wrong about a beautiful gal preaching the word of God? Ain't no law says you gotta scare people to death to come to Jesus.
Paul Strand: Our marriage has been nothing but sin from the very beginning.
Sarah Strand: What in God's name are you saying?
Paul Strand: It's the end of our missions, self-denials, conveniences. A marriage that completely denies the very purpose for man and woman living together.
Sarah Strand: Oh, Paul, stop that!
Paul Strand: Love, honor and obey. We both lied at the altar. I didn't even know what love was. And you, you didn't love me then. You don't love me now. You're so full of fear. Fear of that twisted version of God.
Sarah Strand: Paul, stop it!
Paul Strand: You didn't want a husband. You wanted a mold, a disciple, a puppet that showed that crazy brand of hate and fear instead of love.
Sarah Strand: No, no, no!
Paul Strand: Yes!
Sarah Strand: [Cries] No, no!
Paul Strand: So you yanked a kid out of a choir. You said, "It's the Lord's will that you marry me, Paul." Well, my season in purgatory with you is done! Over! Finished! I had one thing when I met you. A belief in God. And that's all I'm taking with me.
Sarah Strand: I will not let you do this.
Paul Strand: You can't stop me.
Sarah Strand: God will intervene against this sin! God will strike that woman dead. And you, Paul... you will taste the fires of hell!
Paul Strand: I don't believe that anymore, Sarah. I'll go on serving the Lord in my own way and maybe I'll earn a place in the hereafter. I hope so. But there is one thing for sure, it will be my own way.
Angel Baby: I didn't know the sweet light of Jesus then. I didn't know you. Oh, Brother Strand. I gotta say it, and you gotta let me say it. It's been burning in my heart since you give me my healing. Whatever I am now... or come to be... is because of you.
Paul Strand: Because of God, Jenny.
Angel Baby: [Taking his hands] Put your hands to my throat. The way you did that night to give me my healing.
Paul Strand: Jenny, I told you it was God.
Angel Baby: It was you.
Paul Strand: Jenny, this isn't right.
Angel Baby: I can't help myself. Don't you know how I feel? How seeing you every day and being near you is like the lights blazing up in the tent? And Mollie's music...
Paul Strand: [Interrupting her] Jenny, we better go back.
Angel Baby: Not 'til I say it. You gotta let me say it. I don't care if the whole world hears. I love you. I love you so much it's digging my heart out.
