When In Disgrace With Fortune and Men's Eyes: Close-Up on Nicholas Ray's "In a Lonely Place"

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Nicholas Ray's In a Lonely Place (1950) is playing June 2 - July 2, 2017 on Mubi in the United Kingdom as part of the series The American Noir.Although mostly remembered now by the public for his 1955 classic Rebel Without a Cause, Nicholas Ray left behind him a legacy of over twenty feature films. A veritable cinematic explorer, Ray traversed genres ranging from noir, western (most notably his 1954 gender-bending cult Trucolor extravaganza Johnny Guitar), melodrama, epic and experimental film. He dared as few would to shoot in remote and forbidding locations such as the Arctic and Everglades National Park. What are Ray’s films about? As in his signature piece Rebel, despite Ray’s wide-ranging endeavors in genre and subject matter we are often met with anti-hero protagonists who struggle and rail against authority while lamenting their meaningless and circumscribed existences.

‘Movie blood tastes so good’ – on The Neon Demon set with Nicolas Winding Refn

In his first horror movie, Drive director Refn puts Elle Fanning through hell as a young model in La. Ahead of the film’s premiere at Cannes, we go behind the scenes

In May 2015, in the basement of a haunted house in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, one woman chases another with murderous intent. Under deep red light, she wields a poker. At a staircase, they struggle. The second woman falls, holding a gleaming Psycho-style kitchen knife. There is silence.

The Constable (2013) Movie Review

Hong Kong real estate developer turned writer/producer/director Dennis Law returns with “The Constable”, with Simon Yam headlining as a cop dealing with the trials and tribulations of life as well as criminals. The film is somewhat of a departure for Law, and sees him attempting to step away from the schlock of his recent exploitation efforts like “Vampire Warriors”, “Womb Ghosts” and “Bad Blood”, aiming for a little more substance and character depth. Simon Yam plays Lam Kwok Kuen, a veteran police vehicle squad commander who juggles his job with caring for his mentally challenged son, helped by a kindly young woman called Cheui Yan (Niu Meng Meng, “The Second Woman”). Though nearing retirement, Lam is still a force to be reckoned with, and all his younger colleagues look up to him for his law enforcement skills and strong sense of justice. Amongst other incidents and cases, trouble

Notebook's 6th Writers Poll: Fantasy Double Features of 2013

  • MUBI
Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.

All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Viennale 2013 Review: October November, An Intense Family Drama A Tad Overboiled

Götz Spielmann is a very intelligent director and he always seems to know exactly what he wants. In October November he creates an intense drama that sometimes gains emotional ground due to Spielmann's control and sometimes looses because it is just too controlled. It is a family drama encircling the life of two sisters and their dying father. Spielmann puts a lot into the mix: One of the sisters, Sonja, played by Nora von Waldstätten, is an actress and has lost her connection to home. She returns from an isolated life in the big city when her father gets ill.The second woman Verena, played by Ursula Strauss, has an affair with the doctor, who is played in a cheesy, almost embarrassing way by Sebastian Koch. The problem...

My Favourite Waste of Time: Shu Qi Triple Bill: Reviews

The Second Woman/ Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons I know what you're thinking. How can we call it a Shu Qi triple bill when we're only watching two movies? Well as luck would have it, The Second Woman features not one but two star turns from everybody's favourite waste of time. Shu Qi plays twin sisters in Carol Lai's The Second Woman, which is all the incentive I need quite frankly. The second film is Stephen Chow's action fantasy, Journey to the West. You all remember Stephen Chow, right? Quite why he disappeared off the face of the earth is anybody's guess, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Shu Qi plays twin sisters in The Second Woman. If that's not enough to reel you in, I don't know what is? Shu Qi was one of my first loves of Asian cinema, alongside Japanese horror and Donnie Yen.

How The Hollywood Hacker Got Into Scarlett Johansson & Christina Aguilera's Emails

How The Hollywood Hacker Got Into Scarlett Johansson & Christina Aguilera's Emails
Los Angeles -- Long before Christopher Chaney made headlines by hacking into the email accounts of such stars as Scarlett Johansson and Christina Aguilera, two other women say he harassed and stalked them online.

The women, who both knew Chaney, say their lives have been irreparably damaged by his actions. One has anxiety and panic attacks; the other is depressed and paranoid. Both say Chaney was calculated, cruel and creepy: he sent nude photos they had taken of themselves to their family members.

Their accounts as cybervictims serve as a cautionary tale for those, even major celebrities, who snap personal, and sometimes revealing photos.

Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, Fla., is set to be sentenced Monday and could face up to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to nine felony counts, including wiretapping and unauthorized access to a computer, for hacking into email accounts of Aguilera, Johansson and Mila Kunis.

The Second Woman (2012) Movie Review

Hong Kong writer director Carol Lai returns with “The Second Woman”, a suspense drama revolving around the ever popular theme of sinister twins. The film receives a real boost from having popular and award winning actress Shu Qi (“Love”) in the two lead roles, with Shawn Yue (“Love in the Buff”) on hand as her understandably confused beau, plus support from Chen Shu, Zhang Nai Tian and Niu Meng Meng. Shu Qi plays Huibao, an understudy actress rehearsing for a new performance of the play “The Legend of Lady Plum Blossom” with her boyfriend Nan (Shawn Yue). When she is struck down by illness, her twin sister Huixiang (also Shu Qi) takes over in her place, delivering a superb performance and surprising everyone. This puts a great deal of tension on the relationship between the sisters, not least since Huibao starts to suspect that Huixiang might be making eyes at Nan behind her back.

Shawn Yue is Seeing Double in Director Carol Lai’s Thriller The Second Woman

What’s better than one Shu Qi, you ask? Why, two Shu Qis in the same motion picture, of course! Carol Lai’s upcoming thriller “The Second Woman” features the aforementioned actress as twin sisters who are in love with the same guy. It’s kind of like “Dead Ringers”. Except, you know, for all that creepy gynecological stuff. Maybe I’m reaching here. Anyway, here’s a predictably-placed plot synopsis: Hui Bao (Shu Qi) and Nan (Shawn Yue), a longtime couple, are both stage drama actors. They are now intensely rehearsing for their troupe’s tour of their new play “The Legend of Lady Plum Blossom”. After a lot of hard work, Hui Bao becomes the second leading actress of the play. Unfortunately, she falls severely ill right before the last show of the tour, and worries that her failure to perform would destroy her career. Hui Bao’s performance,

Florida Woman Gets Drunk, Pulls Out Teeth, Looks Like Ann Burrell From The Food Network

This is the story of two women. The first is a woman named Tina Masta from Naples, Florida who “got drunk, stripped naked, pulled out her own teeth and then hurled them into a canal. When cops arrived, [she] even asked them for a pair of pliers to remove more of her molars.” The second woman is Ann Burrell who is a chef with a strong personality on the Food Network. These two women have little in common other than the fact that when the former gets pull-out-teeth-drunk, she looks a bit like a falling apart version of the latter. This is basically pre-hab for Ann Burrell. Drunk lady story from Splash.

Someone Else (2010)

There's not a whole lot to the short film Someone Else--but there is certainly something about it. Directed by Andrew Newall, and clocking in at the four minute mark, Someone Else is a snapshot of a paranoid woman who believes that someone else has been in her house. The film bounces back between the woman noticing subtle changes in her house, and her sessions with a therapist going over her paranoia and reoccuring dreams. It's a quick film, but one that does end up staying with you. Just like how the woman continues to believe that someone is there--we too continue to feel like something is there within the film, something we may have missed. The entire film is like the very beginning of some kind of enormous puzzle, framing perhaps the edge of a larger picture. The film provides the skeletal outline of something much bigger that we want to know more about,
