Premiere classe
26 November 2019 | by brogmillerSee all my reviews

This final film of Maurice Tourneur has a magical, other-worldly feel about it aided by a dreamlike score by Yves Daubrier, glorious cinematography by Claude Renoir and production design by Jean d'Eaubonne, one of the greatest in his field. The cast is exceptional. This is 'early' Simone Signoret with her most iconic roles still to come whilst Marcel Herrand as her current suitor and Paul Meurisse as her former lover are, as always, immaculate. Nice performance too from Marcelle Praince as the Duchess and from Daniele Delorme the year before she made 'Gigi'. Oh yes, the ending is devastating. Watching this film is akin to travelling first class in company with the best. Such a pity that the awful injuries suffered by Maurice Tourneur in a car accident obliged him to end a film-making career that began in 1913. There are far worse films than this on which to bow out however!
