Storyline

Egghead decides his road to riches is through a boxing correspondence course. When he graduates, he takes on champion Biff Stew. Biff pummels him mercilessly (the correspondence course record continues to coach him during the match), but by accident, he knocks Biff out until we see it was all in Egghead's head, after being knocked out by the practice equipment. Egghead Takes Up Boxing
28 October 2017 | by VimaconeSee all my reviews

Egghead, wanting to prove himself a real man, takes a course in boxing and imagines himself in the ring against the World's Champion, Biff Stew.

Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton generally did not direct great cartoons as they did not have any good sense of comic timing. However, a couple of the few shorts that they did direct are great cartoons.

It is generally believed by fans, that Hardaway tried to emulate Tex Avery. A prime example is putting Daffy Duck in a rabbit suit, which would later evolve into Bugs Bunny.

Another example are the two cartoons his unit directed starring Tex's creation Egghead. (One of these shorts A-LAD-IN BAGDAD does not credit Ben Hardaway though). These two shorts actually turned out excellent. The gags and pacing are not reminiscent of Tex, but are well paced. (Had Tashlin directed this, it would have surely been a more rapid-fire boxing match).

COUNT ME OUT is probably the best cartoon that Hardaway/Dalton put out and their best attempt at emulating Tex. One of my all time favorite WB cartoons of 1938.

If only this were fully restored.
