Emmy episode analysis: Giancarlo Esposito (‘Better Call Saul’) is back to settle unfinished business in ‘Pinata’
Giancarlo Esposito has scored his second Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy nomination for playing Gus Fring, an affable business leader by day and menacing drug boss by night. This year he is nominated for “Better Call Saul,” whereas his first nomination for this role came in 2012 for “Breaking Bad.” For consideration this time around, the actor has submitted to Emmy judges the season four “Saul” episode “Pinata.”

In this episode, Gus inspects a warehouse to set up a drug laboratory, after which he visits Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis) in the hospital: Gus tells a comatose Hector a long and menacing story about how as a child he waited hours to exact vengeance on a coati who had stolen his fruit. He explains how he was stronger than the coati, but rather than killing it humanely, he kept it alive for some time to let it suffer as it died.
