Emmy episode analysis: Julia Garner (‘Ozark’) spills a dark secret in emotional season finale ‘The Gold Coast’
It’s been quite a year for Julia Garner, who reaped her first Emmy nomination this summer as Best Drama Supporting Actress for “Ozark.” Not long before that she picked up two SAG Award bids (for her individual and ensemble performance) and two Critics’ Choice noms. So the role of Ruth Langmore, a petty criminal helping a Chicago financier (Jason Bateman) launder drug money, has been a pretty lucrative one.

For her Emmy submission, Garner has chosen the season finale, “The Gold Coast.” In this episode, Marty (Bateman) gives Ruth instructions on how to handle drug money when he flees to Australia. But she’s got to contend with her ex-con father, Cade (Trevor Long), who’s blackmailing her for cash. Rather than give into his demands, she spills a dark secret to her cousin, Wyatt (Charlie Tahan), fracturing their relationship.
