When it came to penning the comedic tunes for “The Other Two,” songwriter Brett “Leland” McLaughlin reveals “the trick was to keep the lyric funny” and “not write a comedic melody.” The prolific tunesmith spoke about his work at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, hosted by managing editor Chris Beachum. The freshman Comedy Central series centers on two siblings — a struggling actor (Drew Tarver) and a former dancer (Helene York) — whose younger brother, Chase (Case Walker), becomes an overnight YouTube sensation. McLaughlin provided creators Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider (both of “Saturday Night Live” fame) with many humorous songs for the show, which “really wasn’t much different from what I normally do when writing pop songs for recording artists.
