‘The Spanish Princess’ Review: Starz’s Insipid Miniseries Is Only for Period Fans — But Not History Buffs?

‘The Spanish Princess’ Review: Starz’s Insipid Miniseries Is Only for Period Fans — But Not History Buffs?
Though no student of history by any stretch, even this doomed-to-be-repetitive TV critic was taken aback by how “The Spanish Princess” relies on historical facts for its episodic drama. Delving into Catherine of Aragon’s life from the time she leaves Spain to marry Arthur, Prince of Wales, and the tumultuous international fallout thereafter, the new Starz miniseries isn’t short on conflict, romance, or excuses for lavish period decor — it does look quite good. Yet beyond the would-be cliffhangers that end each of the four episodes, there’s simply not a lot going on in Emma Frost and Matthew Graham’s dud of a period drama. In other words, even with a shift of perspective to women and minority characters, there’s not a lot to learn from “The Spanish Princess,” and little to enjoy either.

TV Review: Starz’s ‘The Spanish Princess’

  • Variety
With sumptuous costumes and a cast including a couple of familiar and beloved costume-drama players, Starz’s “The Spanish Princess,” about the travails of Catherine of Aragon, seems designed to appeal to lovers of broadly drawn historical romance. And yet it’s hard to imagine anyone outside the core constituency for royals and the games they play finding much of interest in “The Spanish Princess”: Baroque in its attention to detail, but telling its version of history strictly for the fandom.

Part of the problem — one that grows increasingly difficult to look past, even despite all the finery on display — is the character at the show’s center. Catherine, who arrives in England as a teenager in order to cement an alliance between the besieged kingdom and her native Spain, is a cipher throughout. Charlotte Hope, the English actress playing Catherine, is saddled both with an unwieldy accent and

‘The Spanish Princess’ Trailer: Starz Royal Drama Spotlights the Formidable First Wife of Henry VIII

The reign of Henry VIII is one of the most storied periods in both history and literature. “The Spanish Princess,” the latest royal drama from Starz, is the newest series to look at that era not just from the throne, but of the high-ranking women whose lives were intertwined with the fate of empires.

Charlotte Hope stars as Catherine of Aragon, looking for a way to overcome the loss of her husband, the teenage Arthur Tudor. The trailer below reimagines the first interactions between Catherine, princess of Spain, and her eventual second husband Henry (Ruairi O’Connor). A prelude to one of the most consequential sagas of the 1500s, “The Spanish Princess” views Catherine as not just a pawn of history, but a young woman who set a plan in motion to rule her own destiny.

Amidst the potential bloodshed and shaky imperial alliances, Catherine is joined by an expansive group of characters,

‘The Spanish Princess’ Panel Probes Racism, Bedding Brother’s Wife, Parrot Stunt Double – TCA

  • Deadline
Starz’s The Spanish Princess showrunners came to TCA to acknowledge taking some license with the historical figures’ ages and timelines in the drama, so as to not wind up with kids in little crowns.

The limited series centers on Catherine of Aragon, the teenage princess of Spain who becomes Princess of Wales. When her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to her. That is, until she claims her marriage was never consummated and that, as a virgin, she may set her sights on the new heir: charismatic, headstrong Prince Harry, who will one day rule as King Henry VIII.

The match of Catherine and Harry was a “real love match,” insisted Charlotte Hope, who plays Catherine.

They were married for 24 years — until Henry VIII became, you know, the Henry VIII who went on to have seven more wives. In the case of Catherine, aka Wife No.
