Carnival Row Review (Spoiler-Free)

Carnival Row is equal parts mystery, fantasy, tragedy, and romance, and the compelling themes of the series will immediately awe viewers.

tumblr TV

This spoiler-free review is based on viewing all eight episodes of Carnival Row season 1.

When presented with the premise for Carnival Row, potential viewers may wonder if they’re in store for an extended exploration of a refugee crisis in a steampunk fantasy setting. After two human factions battle for supremacy in the homeland of a diverse collection of faerie races, the victorious nation known as the Pact engage in wholesale slaughter of the fae while the retreating Burgue must unwillingly accommodate those that are fleeing the carnage. But this eight-episode first season is about so much more than that, weaving together mystery, tragedy, and romance in a world reminiscent of Victorian London with the potential complexity of Middle Earth.

Carnival Row Series Premiere Review – ‘Some Dark God Wakes’

Martin Carr reviews the series premiere of Carnival Row

With the quarrelling politicians, warring unionists and class wars raging this feels like two latter day Scorsese films melded with an Alan Moore benchmark and touches of Tolkien. Carnival Row evokes Victorian London, back street bar fights and unsavoury elements in the dark. There is world building going on from minute one with various ethnic factions, methods of class distinction and a sense of scale which makes things feel grandiose. Neither a murder mystery nor straight up thriller you are given the briefest indication of historical context, before being swathed in polished production design and bombarded by stereotypes.

Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne and Jared Harris headline this sprawling Victorian serial which is distracted by its desire to lay ground work. In an opening hour which sees us bear witness to shipwrecks, faery folk flaunting their wares and more than the occasional

TV Review: ‘Carnival Row’

  • Variety
TV Review: ‘Carnival Row’
The race to replace “Game of Thrones” has its latest entrant, with Amazon’s new “Carnival Row,” a series that combines fantasy, melodrama, ultraviolence, and strained political allegory. But, for now, the “Thrones” legacy seems safe: This new series reaches for credibility with gruesomeness and exaggeration, falling flat at every turn. It’s painful proof that a genre success cannot be reverse-engineered.

That engineering does seem solid: “Carnival Row,” renewed for a second season before its first has aired, was built to last in our current Comic-Con-fueled universe. Its marquee stars are Orlando Bloom (of the “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” cinematic universes) and Cara Delevingne, and it tells a story whose nastiness would appear, in theory, to be ameliorated by the dreamy magic at its margins.

The show takes place in a sort of fantastical Victorian era in which guns and bombs are real, but

Cara Delevingne Gave a Rare Interview About Ashley Benson, and Her Quotes Are So Sweet

  • Popsugar
Cara Delevingne is Marie Claire's September cover star, and she took the opportunity to bare it all - literally. She posed nude for the stunning cover and briefly opened up about her private relationship with girlfriend Ashley Benson. "We weren't looking for it," Cara told the publication, referring to the time they first met on the set of Her Smell in the Spring of 2018. "It was really just very authentic and natural."

Romance rumors about the two began spreading around that time, though they didn't publicly confirm them until this past June. Now, Cara and Ashley seem to be easing up a little on their privacy, as evidenced by Ashley's two new tattoos: the initials CD and another tiny one that says "squish," which is Cara's nickname. Plus, when Cara welcomed Marie Claire into her La home for the interview, she casually introduced her two dogs, as well as "my girlfriend's" dogs,

Carnival Row: Breaking Down the Epic Worldbuilding

Alec Bojalad Kayti Burt Aug 14, 2019

We talked to Travis Beacham and Marc Guggenheim about creating a world of humans and mythical creatures for Carnival Row.

Carnival Row, Amazon's upcoming fantasy drama starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, is epic in its scope and worldbuilding. Set in a neo-Victorian city filled with mythical creatures, the story follows Bloom's Philo, a human detective working to catch a serial killer, and Delevingne's Vignette, a refugee faerie with a dangerous secret.

Created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham (Electric Dreams), with the Arrowverse's Marc Guggenheim as an executive producer, Carnival Row has a lot of TV experience behind-the-scenes. Den of Geek had the chance to chat with Beacham and Guggenheim about bringing such a complex world to life.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Some spellings of mythological creatures and concepts may not be the final Amazon-approved versions.

Inside Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson's Unexpected Love Story

Inside Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson's Unexpected Love Story
Cara Delevingne has never been particularly shy about putting herself out there. The refreshingly candid model and actress lives life on her terms, being herself as much in public as she in private, according to the many admirers who double as dear friends. "She is truly herself while being in the public eye—not easy to do," pal Karlie Kloss shared with Vogue about Delevingne in 2015, when the Chanel muse was newly awash in movie roles, a few years after making her big-screen debut in Anna Karenina. Added Stella McCartney, "She has a fearlessness about projecting what she stands for, which is so rare." Delevingne said that she loves to figure...

Happy birthday, Cara Delevingne! The actress and model, who turns 27 today, made every shipper's dream come true this June when she posted a video of her giving Ashley Benson a kiss. • TVfanatic
If you haven't watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon yet, it's time to get crackin' because the first look of the upcoming season has finally arrived.

For those of you cave dwellers out there, the series comes from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino (who also direct). You might be familiar with them from a little pop culture phenomenon called Gilmore Girls.

Or maybe the one-and-done Bunheads, which ushered Sutton Foster from the stage to the small screen, was your go-to before it was unceremoniously ripped away from view.

Regardless, if you haven't watched, you are missing an utterly delightful tale full of love that also happens to feature some of the funniest dialogue in years.
