Spoon, Joey Bada$$ and 7 Bands/Artists Not Named Harry Styles Who Deserve Late-Night Residencies of Their Own

Spoon, Joey Bada$$ and 7 Bands/Artists Not Named Harry Styles Who Deserve Late-Night Residencies of Their Own
Earlier this week, CBS announced that former One Direction member — and latest addition to the Christopher Nolan Players — Harry Styles is slated for a week-long residency on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” For four consecutive nights, starting on May 15, Styles will serve as the resident musical artist.

With that “Dunkirk” appearance on the horizon and a solo music career still in its early stages, you could do worse than Styles when picking someone to hand the keys to an entire week’s worth of late night. And having been through the process of a breakneck sketch show schedule, he’ll probably be a capable comedy sidekick for Corden.

But what if this residency is a smashing success? Which other bands and artists would be ripe for tenures of their own on the other major daily late-night shows?

Jon Batiste and Stay Human hold down the fort for “The Late Show.

See a Thoughtful Kanye in This Exclusive Clip From Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton
In their new documentary Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, producer-director Jeff Broadway and writer-editor Rob Bralver shine a spotlight on a lesser-known hub of the hip-hop underground: L.A.'s Stones Throw Records. “Stones Throw has been an incubator and a talent discovery entity for almost twenty years now,” says Bralver. "It’s had a massive influence on mainstream pop culture, without a lot of people realizing it."Founded by Chris Manak, a.k.a. DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, in 1996, the avant-garde hip-hop-and-more label has been a trailblazer in the underground music scene for almost two decades. Spearheaded by flagship artists Madlib, J. Dilla, and Mf Doom, Stones Throw garnered a cult following for its willingness to play with genre and to take a chance on experimental, left-of-center artists (recent success stories include Aloe Blacc and Mayer Hawthorne).“They’re an example of a business that is driven entirely by the curator’s tastes,

Lorde's 'Royals': Who covered it best?

Lorde's 'Royals': Who covered it best?
New Zealand pixie pop savant Lorde shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 last week with her ode to normalcy and fantasy, ”Royals.” And with great popularity, comes great YouTube covers.

The song’s admission to the regularity of everyday life, versus the ”luxe” life that so many of our big ”royals” sing about makes it a fun cover for celebrity artists and dreamers alike. Let’s see who’s done it best…so far.

Mayer Hawthorne: He funks things up a bit with heavy percussion and electric guitar for Vevo’s ”Unexpected Covers” series. Unexpected, maybe, but

For Father's Day, skip the U.S. Open and watch more 'Caddyshack'
Does the U.S. Open always fall on the same weekend as Father’s Day because of the stereotype that if you have fathered a child, you automatically love golf? It’s a strange confluence of events, but it seems to work for some people, as no fewer than 27 million dads will get some sort of lame golf-related gift this weekend.

But let’s face it: Golf is boring. Strike that—golf is deadly boring. The most boring.

But forget all that, because the one silver lining to all this golf talk is that it’s an excellent excuse to

Pharrell Williams Expands His Palette

Pharrell Williams Expands His Palette
An hour with music producer Pharrell Williams at Jungle City Studios, up above the High Line and a wide array of new construction, feels like a minor form of time travel: He can connect an mp3 player to the console, turn the monitors up to jaw-rattling volumes, and play you pop music from the near future. These are the tracks he’s written for (or co-written with) various singers, beats he’s made for various rappers, a selection of sounds he’s crafted that could become radio fodder over the coming months. When we meet, he’s making adjustments to “Atm Jam,” a track for Azealia Banks’s upcoming album, and there’s plenty more of his work to follow. A tough-as-nails Jennifer Hudson song with a Rick James feel. A not-dissimilar piece for Miley Cyrus. A cut for Mayer Hawthorne that would sound like seventies smooth-rock kings Steely Dan

See GIFs of Justin Timberlake’s Super-Enthusiastic Band, the Tennessee Kids
It's funny that just two months ago we didn't know who the Tennessee Kids were. Then Justin Timberlake showed up at the Grammys and there they were, having a ball, like we've actually been waiting seven years to see them play music. They're obviously musicians for hire, but they don't act like it. Some say Jt is aping Bruno Mars, Janelle Monae, Mayer Hawthorne, or Sharon Jones, and maybe he is (though they're all actually aping sixties/seventies soul acts, so who cares), but the Tennessee Kids are just better — more enthusiastic to a degree that suggests they really care about the music or get paid insanely well. Either way, the result is an infectious excitement. Screw Jt and Jay-z, we can't wait to see them tour stadiums together. They sing along, dance, constantly mug to the camera: Oh, how we love them. And there is no better tribute than
