FX Chief Says It’s Donald Glover’s Call Whether or Not ‘Atlanta’ Will Continue to Film in Atlanta

  • The Wrap
FX CEO John Landgraf said it’s up to Donald Glover on if his comedy “Atlanta,” which returns to production next spring, will shoot in its namesake city.

“That would be Donald’s call. He hasn’t opined on that yet,” Landgraf told TheWrap. Glover and FX have not addressed how Georgia’s anti-abortion law may or may not affect the show’s decision to continue to film in that state. On Tuesday, FX renewed “Atlanta” for a fourth season, and said that production on both Season 3 and 4 will begin next spring.

When asked by TheWrap if he was aware of a backup plan for “Atlanta,” which filmed the first two seasons in the state, he said he wasn’t. “The artist makes the decision on that. We’ll support Donald in whatever he decides.”

Annapurna Sets Alien Thriller With Screenwriter Randy McKinnon (Exclusive)

  • Variety
Annapurna Pictures is developing a genre feature with up-and-coming screenwriter Randy McKinnon, numerous individuals familiar with the project told Variety.

McKinnon has several irons in the fire, including a family-centric film about collegiate football for Disney Plus and a memoir adaptation to star Lakeith Stanfield at A24. He also serves as co-producer on a forthcoming series for Apple Plus, from creator Simon Kinberg.

The Annapurna project has been positioned by McKinnon as an elevated take on an alien invasion, “set in the hood in South Florida,” insiders with knowledge of the pitch said. An Annapurna spokesperson confirmed the project but would not comment further.

McKinnon is represented by CAA, Grandview and Jackoway Tyerman. He’s currently adapting Kwame Onwuachi’s “Notes From a Young Black Chef,” about a kid from the Bronx who owned and operated a Washington, D.C. fine dining destination by age 26. For the Disney over-the-top service launching in November,

‘Queen & Slim’ Director on Why Her Film’s Heroes Aren’t Really ‘Black Bonnie & Clyde’ (Video)

‘Queen & Slim’ Director on Why Her Film’s Heroes Aren’t Really ‘Black Bonnie & Clyde’ (Video)
The protagonists of “Queen & Slim” are branded as the “black Bonnie & Clyde” after going on the run after killing a racist police officer in an act of self-defense. It’s a catchy name as seen in the new trailer for the film, which was released on Wednesday, but the movie’s director, Melina Matsoukas, doesn’t think that’s the best comparison.

In a special preview event to the press last week, Matsoukas said that black love stories are often compared to other white archetypes. But rather than turn stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith into anti-heroes as in “Bonnie & Clyde,” the story of “Queen & Slim” is meant to be universal with its themes of love, capital punishment, police brutality and the unity of the country.

The nicknames of Queen and Slim are common in black communities, and the romance between on-screen Queen and Slim is

‘Uncut Gems’ First Look: Adam Sandler Gets Criminal With the Safdie Brothers
Adam Sandler has become known as of late for his critically maligned Netflix comedies, but the actor could wash the bad taste out of cinephiles’ mouths in a huge way later this year with “Uncut Gems.” The latest from “Good Time” directors Josh and Benny Safdie gives Sandler a juicy leading role that should bring him back to the critical heights he reached with Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love” and Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories.”

Uncut Gems” was recently announced as a selection for the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival (see full lineup here), which debuted the first look photo above. The festival has also revealed the official plot synopsis: “‘Uncut Gems’ is a crime thriller about Howard Ratner (Sandler), a charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score. When he makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime,

Daniel Craig Investigates Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and More in the Knives Out Trailer

  • Popsugar
We thought it was the Summer of scamming, but obviously it's the Summer of whodunnits! Right on the heels of Netflix's record-breaking Adam Sandler- and Jennifer Aniston-led comedy, Murder Mystery, comes Knives Out, a murder mystery that basically stars all your favorite actors. Daniel Craig and Lakeith Stanfield investigate the murder of a family patriarch - Harlan Thrombey, played by Christopher Plummer - whose children seem . . . less than bereaved about his death.

Said children include Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, and Michael Shannon, so we have no doubt the family's Sunday dinners are wild Af. The trailer alludes to the murder being at the hands of one of the family members, as well as giving us some truly poetic lines like the one delivered by Evans to Craig's heavily accented Detective Benoit Blanc: "What is this, CSI: KFC?" Check out the trailer above and get
