John Simm Talks ‘Cold Courage’ as Lionsgate Boards International Drama (Exclusive)
John Simm plays a rabble-rousing populist politician in “Cold Courage,” and Lionsgate has stepped up and taken international rights to the series.

Based on the series of novels by Pekka Hiltunen, the drama is billed as the biggest yet out of Finland and will bow on the Viaplay streaming service in Scandinavia. With a cast from all over Europe and a shoot spanning Belgium, Finland, Ireland, and the U.K., “Cold Courage” is international in scope and ambition.

That was part of the appeal for Simm, a familiar face on British TV, playing The Master in “Doctor Who” and starring in a host of other shows for British networks. “There was a point I was on BBC and ITV at the same time and that was a bit much,” he told Variety. “I thought it would be nice to step away from that for a little bit and do something I haven’t done,

'Hansel and Gretel 2' Canceled, TV Show Happening Instead?

'Hansel and Gretel 2' Canceled, TV Show Happening Instead?
Back in August, it looked like Paramount's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 was finally on the right track, when French filmmaker Bruno Aveillan signed on to direct the gestating sequel. The news came nearly a year after original Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters filmmaker Tommy Wirkola backed out of the sequel. Today, Deadline reports that this beleaguered project has hit yet another stumbling block, with Paramount reportedly canceling the theatrical sequel altogether, in favor of turning the project into a TV series.

The studio is reportedly formulating a new plan to craft this story into a cable TV series produced by Paramount Television and Gary Sanchez Productions, which produced the original Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Nothing is set in stone yet, but the news comes just a few weeks after Paramount teamed up with Amazon Studios for a Jack Ryan TV series. The last entry in the movie franchise, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,

Blu-ray Review: Turgid ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ Piles on the Gore

Chicago – Witches were always my monster of choice as a child. Their façade of maternal warmth that routinely gave way to fiendish malice was both scary and oddly funny. Actresses love playing this archetype because it allows them to break all the rules followed by photogenic starlets. The fun had by everyone in a witch’s cape—from Margaret Hamilton to Angelica Huston—is timelessly infectious.

My favorite witch in cinematic history is the one played by Cloris Leachman in Len Talan’s sublime, woefully overlooked 1987 adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel.” The film’s entire first half is one long, exquisite build-up to Leachman’s appearance, and it proves to be more than worth the wait. Her feigned grandmotherly kindness is hilariously kooky, as she makes a few Freudian slips about “cooking children—I mean, chicken.” But once Gretel creeps down the basement stairs to discover

Review: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

  • Comicmix
In the wake of revisionist takes on classic fairy tales, it was only a matter of time before someone came up with an approach that was tongue-in-cheek or so over the top it was going to be a wacky delight. I thought that was going to be Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters as the adult versions of the classic kids were first seen with crossbow and rifle, decked out in black leather and ready to kick ass. The trailers made it look like it could be tremendous fun and the cast of Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Famke Janssen made it appealing.

Unfortunately, writer/director Tommy Wirkola couldn’t decide on a consistent tone for the film so sometimes it was a straight drama, sometimes a dark comedy, sometimes just boring. He’d been harboring the concept since 2007 and the pop culture zeitgeist caught up with him, allowing him to bring the notion to life.

Exclusive: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 Will Be Insane Promises Producer Adam McKay
Nearing a wrap on his long-awaited sequel Anchorman: The Legend Continues, writer/producer/director Adam McKay took a few minutes out of his day to chat about next week's release of the Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters - Rated and Unrated Versions Blu-ray. The original Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is a film few people know as a Will Ferrell/Adam McKay production. But the duo was with the project from the first stages of its inception to its final incarnation on screen. And they are returning for the sequel, which is currently in pre-production.

Adam hinted at the scope of this sequel, which he can't wait to see, crediting director Tommy Wirkola for the success of the first film. He promises that Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 has the potential to go completely off the rails.

"It's this deranged Norwegian geek, and he has been given the wheel to this giant corporate money making behemoth.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 Moves Forward

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 Moves Forward
Paramount Pictures and MGM have confirmed that a sequel to Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is in the works. The news comes on the same day that director Tommy Wirkola's fairy tale action-thriller crossed the $200 million plateau at the worldwide box office, a milestone which was integral in both studios deciding to make a sequel.

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as the title characters, 15 years after their nasty experience at the gingerbread house. While the two stars will most likely be back for seconds, their involvement has not been confirmed. It isn't known if writer-director Tommy Wirkola will be back at the helm. While the first movie made just $54 million at the domestic box office since opening in January, it has earned well over $150 million internationally for a current global tally of $205.8 million.

Beau Flynn is expected to return as producer, along with Gary Sanchez Productions principals Will Ferrell,
