Benedict Cumberbatch and Nicholas Hoult Make Sparks Fly in New ‘The Current War’ Trailer (Video)
The fight for the future is here in the latest trailer for “The Current War.” But instead of Benedict Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange, he’s playing another icon, Thomas Edison, who faces off against his greatest rivals in George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.

This latest look at “The Current War” is the first since the film was scooped up by 101 Studios for release. The biopic starring Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult and Tom Holland played at Toronto in 2017 and was in limbo after The Weinstein Co. let it go as part of the company’s bankruptcy proceedings.

But the new look at the film plays up the competition between Edison, Tesla and Westinghouse more so than the genius behind the men, and how the fight over electricity shaped our society.

Entertainment Weekly has debuted a fresh look at the film, which was saved back in April by the newly-formed distributor 101 Studios.

101 Studios reportedly paid around $3 million for “The Current War,” which stars Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison and Shannon as George Westinghouse and follows the two legendary inventors as they race to complete their dueling revolutionary electrical systems.

The Current War” was originally a Weinstein Company property, and premiered at Tiff in 2017, just weeks before a wave of sexual harassment and abuse accusations against co-founder Harvey Weinstein derailed the company. Like a number of other TWC productions, including recent hit “The Upside,” Gomez-Rejon’s film was in a state of limbo for months.

Ridley Scott Still Planning Third ‘Alien’ Prequel — Can Franchise Survive ‘Covenant’ Box Office Bomb?
Ridley Scott’s “Alien” franchise is not dead yet. A recent report from Variety reflecting on the original “Alien” movie’s 40th anniversary mentions that director Scott is still planning a third “Alien” prequel to follow his last entry, “Alien: Covenant.” Scott is planning to direct the next installment after returning to the “Alien” movie franchise to helm the first prequel, “Prometheus,” followed by “Covenant.” Variety reports the next “Alien” movie continues to be in the script phase.

The news that a third “Alien” prequel remains in development should be a relief to fans, considering the franchise’s fate has been unknown after the abysmal box office gross “Covenant” recorded — not to mention the Disney-Fox merger. Many inside the industry have wondered if Disney would plan to continue the “Alien” movies after dwindling box office returns. Despite earning solid reviews from critics, “Covenant” floundered at the box office
