Splintered (2010)

Directed by: Simeon Halligan

Written by: Simeon Halligan, Mat Archer, Stephen Trimingham

Cast: Holly Weston, Stephen Martin Walters, Sacha Dhawan, Jonathan Readwin

I just finished watching Splintered, a 2010 British horror flick that's recently received a spiffy DVD/Blu-ray combo pack release. Since it took up my whole morning, I want to do it justice. So let me see...what kind of movie is Splintered ?

No, that's not quite right, but it's close. Let's dissect it to see if we can do a little better.

Full of tired ideas recycled from other better films, Splintered tells the tale of Sophie (Holly Weston), an eccentric coed who drags her friends deep into the Welsh woods in search of a local legendary creature that's either a werewolf or a fox. Since childhood, Sophie has

Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Release Date: March 23, 2010

For four straight years now, After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For has been unleashed. Eight original horror films to quench your thirst for blood and gore and screams galore. Last year I was able to check out and review their third collection of horrors (Read: DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films To Die For), and was rather excited to check out their new slate this year! Instead of cramming every review into one mammoth review, this year we'll take it one flick at a time, with this little opener stuck at the top of each one.

Within the realms of the horror genre, some of the scariest movies are those that are set in reality. Movies that involve situations and people that you could brush shoulders with every single day,

Twilight Fans Hibernate for the Winter

  • ScreenStar
The 2009 Twilight fever hit hard this fall and left many victims behind; however, it seems that the fever has passed, and like the bears, the Twilight (2008) fans have gone into hibernation. Mid-January, major news hit the Twilight world, but so many fans were in hibernation, few got fired up when they heard The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) DVD release date was slated for March 20, 2010. Twilight fever began last August, when the cast and the crew returned to Vancouver to film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010). The constant news, rumors, and celebrity spotting didn't let up until well after the November 20th, 2009 premiere. With New Moon gone from many theaters, Twilight fans have had no choice but to curl up for the long winter and wait patiently for the symptoms of the fever to resurface. While the vampires and werewolves prepare for the battle of a lifetime in Eclipse, fans are treated

Fantasia '09: Dread (Film Review)

  • Fangoria
After taking a never-ending train ride from Croton-on-the-Hudson, NY, my buddy and I finally arrived in Montreal, rushed back to his place via the metro to drop off our bags at his apartment and sped off to Théàtre Hall Concordia just in time to catch Fantasia’s 9:45 p.m. screening of Dread, the latest film adaptation from Clive Barker’s Books Of Blood. Coincidentally, I had just recently reread my three-volume American collection of Barker’s excellent and groundbreaking short stories, and so I entered the theater with “Dread” fresh in my mind.

First-time writer-director Anthony Diblasi has worked on Barker projects before, having executive-produced The Plague (also second-unit director), Book Of Blood and The Midnight Meat Train, and with Dread he has taken the core of the source material and expanded upon, altered and rearranged it—to a mixed but overall positive result. The setup is simple: Three

Trailer for UK Werewolf Film Splintered

I do love finding out about potentially cool new movies, especially when they’re about werewolves, after the film is all done and ready to be seen by the masses! Nothing like taking out the pain of anticipation to make a movie that much more appealing.

Such is the case with Splintered, a new movie from UK director Simeon Halligan that stars Jonathan Readwin, the latest addition to the cast of Dread, the Clive Barker adaptation currently rolling in the UK. Splintered concerns a girl who is kept prisoner in an abandoned building, her captor insisting that her incarceration is to save her from the man-eating beast roaming the Welsh countryside.

You can see the trailer below and check out the official Splintered site for more info. Seeing as how werewolves are never specifically mentioned in the film’s synopsis, this had better not be a film about someone who
