Shepard Smith Boosted Fox News’ Credibility, Not Its Bottom Line

  • Variety
Journalists from across the TV-news sector will miss Shepard Smith at Fox News. The bean counters at the cable-news outlet’s parent, Fox Corp., will not.

Smith sent media circles teetering off their centers Friday by announcing in the final minutes of his mid-afternoon show that he was leaving the network as soon as he finished uttering the last sentence on his teleprompter. “I heard Shepard’s sign off in real time on my car radio and had to pull over to process it,’says Alisyn Camerota, the CNN “New Day” anchor who worked at Fox News for more than a decade. “Before he was an anchor, there were many breaking news stories we worked on, side by side ,in the field and I was always floored by his indefatigable work ethic. After a 12-hour shift of reporting, he’d still be in the van editing his own pieces well past midnight,

The ‘Whistleblower’ Probably Isn’t

Start with the initial headline, in the story the Washington Post “broke” on September 18th:

Trump’S Communications With Foreign Leader Are Part Of Whistleblower Complaint That Spurred Standoff Between Spy Chief And Congress, Former Officials Say

The unnamed person at the center of this story sure didn’t sound like a whistleblower. Our intelligence community wouldn’t wipe its ass with a real whistleblower.

Americans who’ve blown the whistle over serious offenses by the federal government either spend the rest of their lives overseas, like Edward Snowden, end up in jail,

CNN Will Test Comedy With Colin Quinn Special

  • Variety
On many days, wringing humor out of the current news cycle seems a fruitless task. CNN is going to give it a try.

On Monday at 9 p.m. – in the last hours of Memorial Day – the cable-news outlet will air an hour-long show featuring comedian Colin Quinn, who will perform a version of his recent Off-Broadway show, “Red State Blue State,” with limited commercials. CNN viewers may laugh occasionally with Wolf Blitzer, Brooke Baldwin or Don Lemon (or even at them when they are lampooned on “Saturday Night Live”), but comedy on the At&T-owned cable-news outlet has typically not been a staple.

Could CNN’s future offer more laughs? “This is our first comedy special. We are really eager to see how the audience responds to this format, at which point we will decide about the future,” says Jon Adler, senior director of development for CNN Original Series,

NBC News Readies May Launch of Streaming-Video Service

  • Variety
NBC News already pumps out stories and headlines via broadcast and cable TV. Soon it will do so on a sustained basis via streaming video.

The NBCUniversal unit plans to launch NBC News Now, a free ad-supported news service that will transmit via broadband and is free to anyone, no matter whether they subscribe to NBCU-owned cable networks or not.

The service, which has been known as NBC News Signal and has been available in less obvious fashion in recent months as NBC News experimented with programming, will launch at the beginning of May. “It will be something you can access on Apple TV or Roku or any of those other boxes. We are going to launch with 8 hours of programming, including live updates at the top of every hour, and when breaking news mandates, we’ll go up live as well,” said Noah Oppenheim, the president of NBC News,

CNN Anchor Chokes Up After Reading Parkland Mom’s Message to Murdered Daughter (Video)

  • The Wrap
CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin visibly choked up after reading a letter from a mother to her daughter — who was killed almost a year ago during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Baldwin struggled at various points Wednesday to get through the full message from Lori Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was just 14 years old when she was killed.

“I want to get through this because these words matters,” Baldwin said, her voice quavering through a number of moments.

Inside CNN’s Frenzied and Sometimes Freaky New Year’s Eve

  • Variety
New Year’s Eve is the night on which most CNN anchors let their hair down. Well, except for Anderson Cooper.

Cooper has been CNN’s on-air host for New Year’s Eve since 2002, and his most memorable moments from the stint typically surface as he tries to rein in others who appear with him – hoping Kathy Griffin will tone down her antics, reacting to Don Lemon in New Orleans, and, most recently, trying to keep current co-host Andy Cohen from going overboard with visitors.

“I just try to keep the trains running on time,” says Cooper during a recent interview. “It’s always some sort of disaster waiting to happen, whether it’s Andy insulting one of the guests by asking a question that a guest has no desire to be asked about — and so, yeah, I wince at things a lot, I guess.”

Cooper is typically demure, but

Alaska Earthquake: TV Stations Off Air Amid Extensive Damage From 7.0 Temblor, Aftershocks; Tsunami Warning Canceled
Updated with Donald Trump tweet: A magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked coastal Anchorage, Ak, at 8:30 a.m. local time this morning, badly damaging homes, buildings and infrastructure and forcing local TV stations off the air, according to reports. White House Plays Nice With Jim Acosta In 1st Presser Since Trying To Toss CNN Reporter Out Of Executive Mansion

White House Plays Nice With Jim Acosta In 1st Presser Since Trying To Toss CNN Reporter Out Of Executive Mansion
After all the accusations on live TV of being a “rude, terrible person” by Donald Trump and legal fireworks to get his White House press credentials back, Jim Acosta was front and center today in the briefing room like the whole drama never happened.

Even when listing off a litany of issues and asking whether Trump doesn’t “have faith in his advisors?”, the CNN correspondent could not get a significant rise out of Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in the first White House briefing in several weeks and the first since Acosta’s press badge was yanked on November 7. (The credentials were restored on November 19).

Called on directly by Sanders mid-way through the briefing, Acosta not only got in a question on the legal woes of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, but a trio of follow ups. That seems in contradiction to the “rules and regulations for conduct” the White House is drafting.

Former ‘Roseanne’ writer on ‘The Conners’ killing off the Roseanne character: ‘I thought they handled it really well’
Danny Zuker, a former writer on “Roseanne” and current producer on “Modern Family,” just told CNN’s Brooke Baldwin that he’s pleased with how ABC killed off Roseanne Barr‘s character during Tuesday’s series premiere of “The Connors” spinoff. “I thought they handled it really well,” he said the morning after the episode aired that served as a cautionary tale about America’s reliance on opioids. “I’m happy to see them do well. I really liked the episode last night.”

Because of Barr’s racist tweets last May, ABC canceled “Roseanne” despite it being a ratings behemoth. Soon after, they announced the creation of “The Connors,” which would continue the story of America’s favorite family only without their controversial matriarch. That “Roseanne” revival received two nominations at the 2018 Emmys: Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Laurie Metcalf

Brooke Baldwin Readies New Run of ‘American Woman’ for CNN
Brooke Baldwin is returning to CNN’s homepage to make sure female voices are heard.

The anchor, who typically holds forth on CNN between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. each weekday, is launching a second run of her digital series, “American Woman,” devoted to stories of women who are breaking conventions. The newest iteration is called “American Woman in Politics.” The first run, which appeared earlier this year, profiled well-known women like Sheryl Crow, Betty White, Tracy Reese and Ashley Graham who had shattered boundaries. The next group of interviews focuses on women who may not be as broadly popular, but who are also blazing new paths.

After the first season of the program, Baldwin and her producers “put our heads together. We read the political tea leaves. Not long ago, I had this feeling based upon what I was reading that one of the stories this fall was going

Jeff Zucker Will Stay at CNN Through 2020 Election

Jeff Zucker Will Stay at CNN Through 2020 Election
At&T won’t be able to hang up on Jeff Zucker. The colorful CNN chief signed a deal several months ago that will keep him at the cable-news network through the 2020 election, according to a person familiar with the matter,.

CNN declined to make executives available for comment. Vanity Fair previously revealed details of the executive’s contract.

The pact, previously undisclosed, will dampen speculation that At&T, which gained approval Wednesday to complete its purchase of CNN owner Time Warner, might try to oust Zucker and put a new executive at the helm of CNN. Under Zucker’s tenure, CNN has gained new relevance with its coverage of the Trump administration. That journalism also draws the ire of President Trump, who often takes to Twitter to call CNN “Fake News.” He often uses the same phrase to disparage CNN’s reporters during press appearances.

CNN’s Don Lemon Discusses Calling Out Trump’s Lies and ‘Racist’ Behavior at Variety Summit

  • Variety
Don Lemon has drawn a thin blue line when it comes to covering the Trump administration: He’s unfollowed the president on Twitter.

The longtime CNN anchor disclosed during a keynote address Friday at Variety‘s Ent and Tech summit in New York that he took the step of dropping President Donald Trump from his Twitter feed as part of an effort to ease up his focus on Twitter in general.

“Why do I need that?” Lemon said of following Trump, noting that he has no shortage of sources that provide him news bulletins of the President’s social media missives. Lemon said he’s found Twitter is becoming “such an echo chamber” of outrage for all manner of political perspectives.

CNN’s Brooke Baldwin on Covering Trump, How to Achieve Pay Equality and New Year’s Eve With Don Lemon

CNN’s Brooke Baldwin on Covering Trump, How to Achieve Pay Equality and New Year’s Eve With Don Lemon
Like everybody in the news business, Brooke Baldwin’s life has taken an unpredictable turn since Donald Trump was elected president. “My two hours falls smack dab in the crazy sweet spot of the day where the White House daily briefing happens,” says Baldwin, who commands the CNN anchor desk between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

It’s been a busy year for Baldwin. She’s been a star reporter on the cable news network covering school shootings and March for Our Lives; launched the digital series “American Woman,” highlighting those who have shattered glass ceilings; and rung in the New Year with Don Lemon. As part of our Power of Women New York issue this week, Baldwin spoke to Variety about her around-the-clock coverage.

How has covering the news changed for you in the last year?

Oh gosh. I’ve had the same two hours for eight years.
