News at Ten should get on its bike

Rather than delay its primetime bulletin for The Nightly Show, ITV should make the award-winning Tom Bradby ride off to a different channel – like ITV2

The problem isn’t whether ITV’s The Nightly Show is any good. (Thus far it’s woeful, though the decent ratings and five more weeks of trial and error counsel caution.) The problem is what it does to a News at Ten (now Ten-Thirty) jostling with the end of the BBC news and the beginning of Newsnight at an information spaghetti junction that benefits neither viewers nor newsmakers, as audiences – half of Tom Bradby’s by day two – go missing.

Michael Grade once declared that you can’t be a proper TV channel unless you have news in your armoury. But digital changes such verities fast.

ITV's Tom Bradby swaps battle of the bongs for festive bells

News at Ten anchor takes break of nearly three weeks over Christmas as fellow presenters step up for shifts

The rise from political editor to anchor of ITV’s new-look News at Ten has clearly taken it out of Tom Bradby. Bradby, who stepped into the role at the beginning of November, did his last newsreading stint on 17 December before heading off for some Christmas rest and relaxation. He will return to screen for the first time in 2016 on Monday, an extended break that one wag refers to as sticking to the “parliamentary holiday’’ regime of his previous beat. The other main ITV News presenters all put in appearances over the festive break – Mark Austin on the 28th, Julie Etchingham on the 29th, Mary Nightingale on the 30th, Alastair Stewart on the 31st and Nina Hossain on 1 January – keeping the hot seat warm for a well-rested Bradby. While Bradby was off on leave,
