One Piece Live Action Series Sets Sail at Netflix

The immensely popular pirate manga is getting a live-action series on the streaming giant that's also producing Cowboy Bebop.

Set sail for the Grand Line in search of the One Piece! The global manga and anime juggernaut have a lot to celebrate thanks to announcement from The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix has greenlit a live-action adaption of One Piece! The series is set to be ten episodes and will be produced in partnership between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, who are also producing the live-action Cowboy Bebop for the streaming service.

One Piece is one of the world's most popular and best selling manga titles ever, also receiving an ongoing anime adaptation, many video games, and a long string of animated films.

Netflix Orders Live-Action Series Based on ‘One Piece’ Manga
The iconic Japanese manga “One Piece” is being adapted by Netflix into a live-action series.

Netflix has issued a 10-episode order for the project, teaming with Tomorrow Studios, which is also producing the streamer’s other forthcoming manga-based series “Cowboy Bebop,” and the original series’ publisher Shueisha. The series was first announced as being in development in 2017.

One Piece” is a pirate adventure story written by Eiichiro Oda which has sold over 460 million copies worldwide. The series center around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who embarks on a journey to become king of the pirates and find the celebrated “One Piece” treasure. A whopping total of 14 animated films based on the series have been released, along with a long-running anime series which is currently in its 20th season.

‘One Piece’ Live-Action Series Based On Manga Classic Ordered By Netflix From Tomorrow Studios

Netflix has greenlighted One Piece, a live-action series based on one of the best-selling manga titles of all time.

The 10-episode series comes from Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha. Tomorrow Studios also is behind another live-action Netflix series adaptation of a classic Manga property, the upcoming Cowboy Bebop.

One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King.

Veteran Steven Maeda is the writer, showrunner and executive producer. Matt Owens is writer/executive producer.

Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios are executive producers alongside Eiichiro Oda, the author of the manga series.

One Piece is a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between Adelstein and ITV Studios.

One Piece Film: Gold surpasses Finding Dory at Japanese box office.

This is the 13th feature film of popular same-name manga series by Eiichiro Oda. Since its premiere on July 23, the film has been receiving an overwhelming reception from the audience. Additionally, it has an outstanding record of 820,830 tickets sold in its opening weekend.

As of August 2, One Piece Film: Gold is earning over 2.5 billion yen, a mere eleven days after the premiere date. The film is now the fastest grossing summer film of the year in Japan. In addition, it has also surpassed Finding Dory, which earned just 2.1 billion yen in a similar nine-day period.

Bandai Namco has announced that it will be localising One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 for a European release.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 will be released on Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Ps Vita and the PC via Steam in Europe. This is the first time the spin-off series has appeared on either PS4 or Steam, and those versions will feature enhanced graphics and more enemies on the screen, Bandai Namco has said.

This is the first film released in the UK despite being a cinematic entry from 2009. This means that certain elements may be jarring for those who have been following the DVD releases of the series over the last year as we encounter characters not yet introduced in the dubbed run. Those who have kept up with the show in its original Japanese language will be more settled though.
