Film Review: ‘Burn’

  • Variety
Film Review: ‘Burn’
There’s more smoke than fire in “Burn,” a reasonably promising single-location thriller that never quite settles on what it wants to be — a straight-up suspense piece, twisty black comedy, oddball character study, etc. “All the above” would be a tall but not impossible order to pull off. The problem is that writer-director Mike Gan’s first feature, though competently handled in most departments, doesn’t commit enough to any approach to fulfill its potential.

The result is a passably diverting, moderately offbeat but also instantly forgettable hybrid that doesn’t even rank among the best truck-stop-in-crisis movies: “Shack Out on 101” and “Splinter” remain unchallenged atop that slim hierarchy. “Burn” opens on 10 U.S. screens Aug. 23, simultaneous with VOD and Digital launch.

Melinda (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) arrives for her night shift at a 24-hour gas station/quickie-mart type joint off an undesignated highway. The kind of nondescript worker drone whose over-friendliness

Review: Escape Plan 3 (2019)

With Rambo: Last Blood due to hit cinemas September 2019 and a rumoured fourth entry in the Expendables franchise in the works, Sylvester Stallone may be 73, but he is not showing no signs of slowing down. The latest sequel from Stallone, Escape Plan 3 is the third film in the series and the second to get a limited theatrical with a home release.

This may be an unexpected sequel as Escape Plan 2: Hades (2018) was met with disappointment by fans and critics, with Stallone himself also making a public statement on Instagram describing it as, “the worst produced film I have ever had the misfortune to be in”. There are several areas in which Hades could have been improved, but one of the the biggest issues was the limited screen time for the film’s main headlined stars. Stallone being the main draw and was given a cameo role and used as

Beijing-Born USC Filmmaker On The Unifying Power Of Slasher Films: “Fear Is Universal”

Beijing-Born USC Filmmaker On The Unifying Power Of Slasher Films: “Fear Is Universal”
This is a big month for young filmmaker Mike Gan, a USC graduate and Beijing native who is notching writer-director credits on two film projects, one for television and the other an indie film for theatrical release.

First, on Hulu, Gan has the just-released School Spirit, a campus horror film with an outsider-kids-in-detention plot that is equal parts Breakfast Club and Scream. The slasher is the newest installment in Blumhouse’s Into The Dark showcase series on Hulu and stars Corey Fogelmanis (Ma) and Annie Q. (The Leftovers).

Second, on Aug. 23, Gan makes his feature film theatrical debut with Burn, a thriller set in a gas station where a would-be bandit portrayed by Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) is captured by employees. The eOne and Momentum Pictures production (which was shot under the name Plume) also stars Suki Waterhouse, Tilda Cobham Hervey,

Movie Review – Escape Plan 3 (2019)

Escape Plan 3, 2019.

Directed by John Herzfeld.

Starring Sylvester Stallone, Dave Bautista, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Jin Zhang, Harry Shum Jr., Jaime King, and Devon Sawa.

Synopsis:

Security expert Ray Breslin and his cohorts have to break into a prison to rescue a billionaire’s daughter from the clutches of a former colleague’s son out for revenge.

Okay, you knew this was coming, don’t pretend you didn’t. You watched 2013s Escape Plan because it brought together iconic action stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in a co-headliner that was a fun blast of exaggerated violence that harked back to their glory days (despite being tinged with sadness that it wasn’t made 25 years ago while both actors were still huge box office draws). Escape Plan 2 arrived to little fanfare last year and things weren’t good – Schwarzenegger did not return and was ‘replaced’ by an underused Dave Bautista

My Interview With Devon Sawa About Escape Plan: The Extractors, My Childhood Crush on Him, and His Upcoming Projects

Last week, I got to interview Devon Sawa about his role in the film Escape Plan: The Extractors. We delved into the role and his experiences, his upcoming films, and I got to gush a bit about my childhood crush on him. It was a great time. Check out the interview below:

Jessica Fisher: Hi, I’m Jessica Fisher from GeekTyrant, and I just have to say that twelve year old me is beside herself right now. I’m a big fan from way back., especially Now and Then.

Devon Sawa: Thank you so much. And you know what? That’s exactly how twelve year old me felt filming this movie with Sylvester Stallone. Not that I’m anything like Stallone. What I’m trying to say is thank you.

Jf: Of course! Do you still get a lot of women approach you who were young fans of yours.

Trailer For Josh Hutcherson and Suki Waterhouse's Gas Station Thriller, Burn

An intense trailer has been released for the upcoming thriller Burn, which is described as a “contained thriller following a lonely female gas station attendant who must face a desperate man who tries to rob the store. When the heist goes wrong, she takes the opportunity to make a connection with the man.”

The movie actually looks really good and is set entirely at a gas station. It stars Josh Hutcherson as Billy, who after attempting to rob a gas station, ends up being tied to a chair by the two gas station employees, Suki Waterhouse and Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and trapped in a back room where they try to figure out what to do with him.

The movie was directed by USC graduate Mike Gan and also stars Harry Shum Jr., Shiloh Fernandez, Wayne Pyle, John D. Hickman, Rob Figueroa, and James Devoti.

The movie is set to be released on August 23rd!

Official Trailer for Gas Station Thriller 'Burn' Starring Josh Hutcherson

"Let's get out of here while we still can – together." Momentum Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for a contained thriller tilted just Burn, set entirely at a gas station one night. It's the feature directorial debut of USC graduate Mike Gan, telling the story of a misguided crook who tries to rob the gas station. But he gets more than he bargained for when the employee fights back, scolding him with a pot of hot coffee then tying him up to a chair. The two gas station workers then try to connect with the robber before the cops arrive. And then what? Starring Josh Hutcherson as Billy, with Suki Waterhouse, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Harry Shum Jr., Shiloh Fernandez, Wayne Pyle, John D. Hickman, Rob Figueroa, and James Devoti. This seems like a concept for Gan to showcase his talent, and it looks like it has some clever twists. Here's the

Glee Costars Reunited at a Bar to Sing "Shallow" and "The Circle of Life," and I Can't Stop Smiling

A few former castmates of the hit show Glee got together for a fun reunion on Friday. Costars Chord Overstreet, Jenna Ushkowitz, Harry Shum Jr., Kevin McHale, Darren Criss, Diana Agron, and Amber Riley hit up Los Angeles piano bar Tramp Stamp Granny's - which is co-owned by Darren and his wife, Mia - before sharing a couple of photos that sent Glee fans into a frenzy.

The snaps feature the seven friends smiling into the camera looking . . . gleeful. While one photo is super blurry, the other is much more lucid. "Reality vs expectations," Kevin joked, posting a gallery with the hazy picture followed by the clear shot. Harry also posted the photos, adding, "This was a fun reunion and all but where did my legs go in this pic?"

Throughout the night, the stars enjoyed a few karaoke sessions, singing tunes such as Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's

Terrible Teaser Trailer for Action Sequel 'Escape Plan: The Extractors'

"What's going down?" Lionsgate has debuted the first teaser trailer for action sequel Escape Plan: The Extractors, the third movie in the Escape Plan series. Same as the second movie, Escape Plan 3 is being released direct-to-vod/DVD continuing the action-heist-prison break movie series which first started with Escape Plan in 2013 (directed by Mikael Håfström; this one did actually open in theaters). I don't know how they keep convincing him to come back, but Sylvester Stallone stars again as Ray Breslin, the masterful prison escape artist / "security expert", who gets really upset when his girlfriend is kidnapped. The plot also involves a Hong Kong tech mogul's daughter being taken, and so Breslin gets his old team back to get them out and home safely. Also starring Dave Bautista, Jaime King, Harry Shum Jr., Devon Sawa, Daniel Bernhardt, Malese Jow, Curtis Jackson, and Russell Wong. I couldn't care any less about this series.

Harry Shum Jr. on His Trailblazing Career and Defying Asian-American Stereotypes on Screen

Harry Shum Jr. is taking Hollywood by storm, one role at a time. The 37-year-old has played a wide range of characters over the years, but what's most noteworthy is how these characters defied stereotypes of Asian-Americans on screen. In 2009, Shum danced his way into our hearts with his role on Glee as Mike Chang, an aspiring dancer who constantly struggled with pursuing his dreams and following the path his father had planned out for him. Not only did the character inspire fans to be comfortable in their own skin, but he also inspired them to go after what they want despite the obstacles they face.

After his character's arc on Glee wrapped up, Shum went on to star in Freeform's Shadowhunters as Magnus Bane, a character who has made an impact on the Lgbtq+ community in particular. While Magnus's relationship
