Netflix Orders Live-Action Series Based on ‘One Piece’ Manga
The iconic Japanese manga “One Piece” is being adapted by Netflix into a live-action series.

Netflix has issued a 10-episode order for the project, teaming with Tomorrow Studios, which is also producing the streamer’s other forthcoming manga-based series “Cowboy Bebop,” and the original series’ publisher Shueisha. The series was first announced as being in development in 2017.

One Piece” is a pirate adventure story written by Eiichiro Oda which has sold over 460 million copies worldwide. The series center around Monkey D. Luffy, a young man who embarks on a journey to become king of the pirates and find the celebrated “One Piece” treasure. A whopping total of 14 animated films based on the series have been released, along with a long-running anime series which is currently in its 20th season.

Rose Byrne Aerobics Dramedy ‘Physical’ Nears Apple Series Order
Apple TV Plus is preparing to give a series order to a dramedy starring Rose Byrne, Variety has learned.

Titled “Physical,” the series is set in a 1980s Southern California beach community. It follows a woman (Byrne) struggling in her life as a quietly tortured housewife who finds an unconventional path to power through an unlikely source: the world of aerobics.

The series hails from Annie Weisman, who will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner on “Physical.” Alex Cunningham will also executive produce along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios. Tomorrow Studios will produce for Apple.

Byrne has primarily worked in film for the last several years, holding starring roles in projects such as “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” “Instant Family,” “Neighbors” and its sequel, as well as multiple entries in the “X-Men” franchise. She previously appeared on the FX series “Damages,” for which she was nominated for two Golden Globes and two Emmys.

Apple is nearing a series order for Physical, a dramedy headlined by Rose Byrne in her first regular role on an ongoing series since her breakout starring turn on FX’s Damages. The project hails from Almost Family creator Annie Weisman, Dirty John showrunner Alexandra Cunningham and Tomorrow Studios.

‘One Piece’ Live-Action Series Based On Manga Classic Ordered By Netflix From Tomorrow Studios

Netflix has greenlighted One Piece, a live-action series based on one of the best-selling manga titles of all time.

The 10-episode series comes from Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha. Tomorrow Studios also is behind another live-action Netflix series adaptation of a classic Manga property, the upcoming Cowboy Bebop.

One Piece follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew as they explore a fantastical world of endless oceans and exotic islands in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” to become the next Pirate King.

Veteran Steven Maeda is the writer, showrunner and executive producer. Matt Owens is writer/executive producer.

Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios are executive producers alongside Eiichiro Oda, the author of the manga series.

In case you forgot, this is the long-gestating show that started at TNT, moved to TBS and then moved back to TNT. John Cho Injured on Set of Netflix’s ‘Cowboy Bebop,’ Production Halted for 7-9 Months
Cowboy Bebop” star John Cho sustained a knee injury on the set of the live-action Netflix series while filming in New Zealand in October, Variety has learned, leading to a 7-9 month break in production.

While the nature of the incident that led to the injury is not altogether clear, it occurred during a rehearsed sequence that was not considered to be a large-scale stunt. Cho is back in Los Angeles, where he will undergo surgery, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Netflix’s “Cowboy Bebop” is a 10-episode adaptation of the original 26-episode anime series from Sunrise studio, about a group of misfit bounty hunters in space, led by Spike Spiegel. Cho plays Spiegel, described as an “impossibly cool bounty hunter with a deadly smile, a wry wit, and style to spare,” who traverses the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, who will be portrayed by Mustafa Shakir.

‘Cowboy Bebop’: Netflix Series Shuts Down Production For 7-9 Months Following Star John Cho On-Set Injury

Netflix’s upcoming live-action series Cowboy Bebop is going on a lengthy hiatus following a knee injury sustained by lead John Cho on the set of the show in New Zealand.

Sources describe the injury as a freak accident that happened on the last take of a routine and well-rehearsed scene. It requires surgery, for which Cho has been flown back to Los Angeles, and an extensive rehabilitation. The production shutdown is expected to last seven to nine months. The new filming schedule will be set once Cho’s prognosis is clear.

Cowboy Bebop, an adaptation of the cult Japanese animated series, was a few episodes into production on its 10-episode order when the accident happened. Netflix marked the show’s start of production last week with a behind-the-scene video which featured Cho (you can watch it below).
