‘Frozen II’ Stars Perform Their Audition Songs, From The Lumineers to ‘Ragtime’ (Watch)
Yes, even “Wicked” phenom Idina Menzel had to do a table read before signing on to the original “Frozen.”

Menzel told Variety‘s Marc Malkin at the premiere of “Frozen II” that while she didn’t have to go through what could strictly be called an “audition,” she still had to do a read through and sing a duet with Kristen Bell before everything was set in stone.

“We had to sing a duet, but they didn’t have songs written yet, so they asked us to come up with something. It was Kristen’s idea to sing ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ as a duet because it felt very sisterly,” she said outside Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

With that, Menzel broke into “Did you ever know that you’re my hero,” the first lines from the chorus of the 1982 song, which topped the charts in 1989 when Bette Midler sang it for the soundtrack to “Beaches.

‘First Wives Club’ Star Ryan Michelle Bathe on Getting ‘Hot as Fish Grease’ for Bet+ Series (Video)
It’s difficult to imagine a way in which “First Wives Club,” a show about a trio of best friends dealing with divorce, cheating and overall unsatisfying marriages, would avoid the use of the “angry woman” trope. According to star Ryan Michelle Bathe, the Bet+ series doesn’t bother to avoid it but instead takes advantage of the opportunity to use it.

“I think one of the ways that they do that in this show is we really lean into it, you know? It’s not just anger for the sake of anger — which everyone would understand somebody being angry in this situation — but they lean into the anger,” Bathe told TheWrap in an interview, which you can view above.

‘First Wives Club’ Star Ryan Michelle Bathe Talks ‘Homage’ Series and Evolution of Feminism
For almost two decades Ryan Michelle Bathe has made the rounds on such television shows as “Girlfriends,” “Army Wives,” “Empire” and “This Is Us.” But now she will be best known as one of the stars of Bet Plus’ “First Wives Club.” The show was originally set up at Paramount Network, but in late 2018 it was moved to another Viacom network, Bet. Then, Bet announced it would be one of the first shows launched on its new streaming service, Bet Plus. “First Wives Club,” which is from Tracy Oliver and loosely based on the 1996 film of the same name, is a show Bathe prefers to call an “homage,” rather than a reboot.

Your character Ari in “First Wives Club” is being positioned as a lawyer and friend first, before the relationship drama. Is it intentional for you to seek out roles that are notably empowered and educated at this point in your career?

TV Review: ‘The First Wives Club’ on Bet Plus

  • Variety
Launching a series based on a beloved property is harder than it seems. On the one hand, you get the immediate boost of name recognition to lure in preexisting fans. On the other, straying too far from the plot and/or spirit of the original risks sparking their righteous wrath. It’s a tricky balance to strike, as Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and Paramount’s shelved “Heathers” reboot found out the hard way.

Enter “The First Wives Club,” a new series from Tracy Oliver (“Girls Trip”) that will drop simultaneously with Bet’s new streaming service, Bet Plus. The original 1992 movie starred Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn as a trio of furious wives in varying states of crisis, each learning how to stand up to their careless husbands and put themselves first. In that respect, the themes of the movie are pretty much timeless, and

‘First Wives Club’ Boss on Expanding the ‘Definition of Beauty’ in Television
Girls Trip” writer Tracy Oliver says she had a “dream situation” as the creator and executive producer of the new Bet Plus comedy “First Wives Club.”

“When I met with them I said, ‘I love the movie, but it’s not something I’m interested in if I can’t do it with women of color,'” Oliver said at the Tribeca TV Festival in New York City Thursday night. “I can honestly say we went into it with me saying what my parameters were up front, and they agreed to it.”

Oliver’s “First Wives Club” is inspired by the 1996 revenge comedy of the same name that featured Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler. Her version stars Ryan Michelle Bathe, Michelle Buteau and Jill Scott. The project was originally set up at Paramount Network, moved to Bet in late 2018 and then announced to be part of the launch
