Gremlins Is Coming to 4K Ultra HD for Halloween, Watch the Trailer

At last, Gremlins is coming to 4K Ultra HD this fall. As far as 80s movies go, it doesn't get much more classic than this. That's not to say it's the most iconic movie from that particular decade, but it's certainly up there and that's why it has remained part of the pop culture conversation for all these years. Now, for those of us who want to see Gizmo in action in high-definition, Warner Bros. has it covered.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release a new edition of the 1984 classic on 4K Ultra HD on October 1. Luckily, that puts it out just in time to enjoy for the Halloween season. Even though this is technically a Christmas movie, it works incredibly well as a Halloween movie. To honor the occasion, they've released a new trailer which showcases the high-definition version of the movie. Even though there is no new footage or anything like that,

John Carl Buechler, Horror Effects Legend and Director, Dies at 66

John Carl Buechler, Horror Effects Legend and Director, Dies at 66
As you might imagine when it comes to being a horror movie fan, on top of loving and having an encyclopedia-level knowledge of directors and actors and scream queens, even the casual fan also takes great notice of the people behind the scenes of the make-up effects. One such hero of the gore galore genre is actor, writer, producer, director, special effects artist John Carl Buechler. And today we have the unfortunate news that after being diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer in 2019, Buechler has passed away at the age of 66.

As mentioned-above, Buechler is best known for his work as special effects makeup designer on such creepy classics as Luca Bercovici's Ghoulies, Troll, Crawlspace, TerrorVision, Stuart Gordon's Dolls and From Beyond, Cellar Dweller, and Renny Harlin's Prison. He also contributed effects to Brian Yuzna's Bride of Re-Animator, Adam Simon's Carnosaur, and Adam Green's original Hatchet.

Will The Fly Remake Still Happen After Disney / Fox Deal Is Done?

As I think we all known by this point in time, soon Disney will be buying up Twentieth Century Fox and all of its properties here in the near future. While there is no word on just which of Fox's intellectual properties Disney plans to keep moving forward, today we have word (a rumor) that Disney plans to bring George Langelaan's classic 1957 short story The Fly back to the big screen. You might remember that there is already another remake of The Fly in the works from Sleight filmmaker J.D. Dillard who co-wrote "a cool script" with his Sleight writing partner Alex Theurer. We're hearing that this is still the film Disney is interested in developing.

And this news (rumor) makes a whole lot of sense to this guy, considering The Fly is not only one of the best sci-fi horror tales out there, but it has proven

Celebrating Makeup Artist Extraordinaire Matt Rose

  • DailyDead
I never had a chance to meet Matt Rose in person, but we had become friends over the last few years via emails and a few phone calls, and he was somebody who you felt like you knew for a lifetime even after one conversation. For those who may not know, I started working on a series of books celebrating the lives of special effects artists in 2016, which is how I connected with Matt, and his story was (and still is) set to be a part of the next installment that should hopefully be out later this year. Tragically, though, Matt Rose passed away this weekend, and it breaks my heart that he won’t be here to enjoy seeing his career commemorated in print, because he deserved to get to enjoy that moment. So, I thought I would take this moment to pay tribute to Matt here and let

Drive-In Dust Offs: Screamers (1981)

  • DailyDead
The saying goes that books and their covers aren’t always the same or words to that effect; this particular logic had long been applied to the hallowed halls of the video stores, as eye-popping box art used to lure an unsuspecting victim could lead to atrocities or worse, boredom. And then there’s Screamers (1981), which promises something cool and twisted on the cover yet delivers a completely different film – an Italian period adventure tale with killer fish guys filleting to and fro. Different? You bet. Kind of delightful? Definitely.

The cover of Screamers boasts well, a screaming man who has been turned inside out, or rather appears just to be wearing his veins like an Italian horror wetsuit. Groovy, right? Well you can thank Roger Corman and his New World Pictures for the hucksterism; Screamers original title is The Island of the Fishmen, made in ’79, director Sergio Martino (Torso

The Fly’s Jeff Goldblum Recalls Intense Scenes And Those Oscar-Winning Effects

In what’s shaping up to be a busy week for the great and powerful Jeff Goldblum, the Thor: Ragnarok actor has been chatting to Yahoo Movies (h/t Bloody Disgusting) about one of his most famous roles: Seth Brundle.

Yes, David Cronenberg’s The Fly still holds a special place in Goldblum’s heart, as it helped launch his film career back in 1986. It’s also one of his more memorable performances – even by Jeff Goldblum’s own lofty standards – as his wildly eccentric scientist mutated beyond recognition soon after his DNA was fused with that of a bug-eyed insect.

As for Seth Brundle’s status as an atypical ’80s sex symbol, Goldblum told Yahoo Movies the following:

I had my flowy locks at that point. If anything is attractive, at least for me, it is somebody who is passionate and interested in something, and focused on something, and has some brainpower too,

October Horrors 2017 Day 29 – The Fly (1986)

The Fly, 1986.

Directed by David Cronenberg.

Starring Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, and John Getz.

Synopsis:

Seth Brundle is an eccentric but brilliant scientist who has invented a pair of device that could change the world; teleportation pods. Deciding to test his inventions by teleporting himself, Brundle fails to notice the presence of small fly that has joined him in the pod. With the pods inadvertently fusing the DNA of Brundle and the fly, the human guinea pig soon begins to undergo a terrifying transformation into a human insect.

Of all sub-genres of horror, the one that really freaks me out is the one dubbed “body horror”, a genre that depicts often the human body undergoing some kind of gruesome and terrifying transformation through scientific mishap or parasitic infestation.

The master of this genre for years was the Canadian director David Cronenberg who brought us the disgusting delights of Shivers, The Brood

Class of 1987: Frightning Strikes Twice – Celebrating House II: The Second Story with the Cast & Crew [Part 2]

[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.

For the uninitiated, House II follows a young man named Jesse (Arye Gross), who inherits a strange house from the parents who gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. As he begins to settle into his new dwelling with the help of his girlfriend, Kate (Lar Park Lincoln), his best pal, Charlie (Jonathan Stark), and Charlie’s aspiring musician girlfriend,
