‘Bodyguard’ Scores BBC’s First Best Drama Series Emmy Nomination In Nearly 50 Years Although Star Richard Madden Misses Out

Bodyguard has become the BBC’s first series to be nominated for an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy in nearly 50 years.

The thriller, which aired in the U.S. via Netflix as part of its co-licensing model, where it picked it up at “script stage”, was originally produced by ITV-owned producer World Productions for the British public broadcaster.

While rival ITV has been nominated in the category as recently as 2016 for season six of Downton Abbey, and Netflix picked up noms for its remake of BBC political drama House of Cards, the BBC has to go back to 1972 when Glenda Jackson-fronted drama Elizabeth R, aired by PBS in the U.S. for its original nomination in the main drama category. Strangely, that year BBC drama The Six Wives of Henry VIII, a limited series that aired on CBS, was also nominated.

In addition to its Outstanding Drama Series nomination,

‘Notting Hill’ at 20: Why Julia Roberts Was the Only Choice to Play Anna

‘Notting Hill’ at 20: Why Julia Roberts Was the Only Choice to Play Anna
The manager of London’ Notting Hill Bookshop has a ready supply of Kleenex because so many of the patrons walk in and break into tears.

From 1979-2011, the store was known as the Travel Bookshop. It became famous in “Notting Hill,” the hit romantic comedy celebrating its 20th anniversary on May 28. Julia Roberts stars as Anna Scott, the world’s biggest movie star, and Hugh Grant as Will Thacker, the divorced owner of the bookshop, who meet cute and fall in love.

The actual store was too narrow and small to film there, said manager Olga Lewkowska, so a set was built around the corner from the store, which is located at 4 Blenheim Crescent. The original owner sold the store in 2011 because its focus was too narrow to sustain. The bookshop does still have a travel section but basically features gift books, limited editions or reprints of first editions.

The film, which came out in 1999, starred Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in the lead roles of movie star Anna Scott and bookstore owner William Thacker.

Directed by Roger Michell and written by Curtis (who would go on to write and direct Love, Actually), the film also boasted a delightful ensemble including Rhys Ifans, Emma Chambers, Gina McKee, Hugh Bonneville, James Dreyfus, Tim McInnerny and Emily Mortimer.

But while Roberts, 51, and Grant, 58, gave fans of the film a relationship to root for, Roberts wasn’t always interested in the movie.

‘Bodyguard’s Richard Madden Scores Upset Golden Globe Win For Best Actor In A Drama Series
Not too many people had penciled in Richard Madden to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama Series — including the man himself. And he said so from the stage.

Game of Thrones‘ alum Madden topped a field of which only one person — Ozark‘s Jason Bateman — also was nominated in the category last year. The also-rans this go-round were Stephan James (Homecoming), Billy Porter (Pose) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans). It was Madden’s first career Globe win and nomination. Rhys won the comedy actor Emmy in September for the final season of FX’s Cold War spy thriller.

The BBC politcal thriller, which streams on Netflix, is set in and around the corridors of power. Bodyguard follows David Budd (Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service.
