Alfonso Cuaron wins the DGA Award for Roma, full list of winners revealed

Alfonso Cuaron’s Oscar hopes received a major boost last night with the Director’s Guild of America honouring the filmmaker with the DGA Award for Best Feature Film for his acclaimed Netflix drama Roma.

The DGA Award is seen as a major indicator for the Best Director Oscar, having only differed with the Academy Awards on seven occasions since its inception in 1949. Cuaron previously won the DGA Award for Gravity, and went on to receive the Best Director Award that same year, while last year’s winner Guillermo del Toro also won the Oscar for the Best Picture-winning The Shape of Water.

Other winners from the 71st annual DGA Awards including Bo Burnham (First Time Feature Film Director for Eighth Grade), Tim Wardle (Documentary Director for Three Identical Strangers), Adam McKay (Drama Series Director for Succession), Bill Hader (Comedy Series Director for Barry) and Ben Stiller (Movies for Television

Alfonso Cuarón has triumphed at the Directors Guild of America Awards, making the “Roma” auteur the official frontrunner as we near the Academy Awards in just a few weeks. Cuarón previously won the award for “Gravity,” for which he also won the Oscar.

Here’s the full list of winners:

Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born

2019 DGA Awards: Complete winners list in all 11 categories

2019 DGA Awards: Complete winners list in all 11 categories
The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.

Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.

Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”

On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

A three-peat is in the cards for ‘Saturday Night Live’ at the DGA Awards
Saturday Night Live” will score a hat trick” at Saturday’s Directors Guild of America Awards. In our latest predictions, Don Roy King has 16/5 odds to . bag his third straight win in the variety series category for the Adam Driver-hosted Season 44 premiere.

The veteran “SNL” director is also the reigning champ in the corresponding Emmy category, but not for the same episode; he won the Emmy for the Donald Glover episode from Season 43. The Season 44 premiere featured Kanye West as the musical guest and Matt Damon‘s debut as now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in the cold open.

King is ahead of Paul Pennolino (“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”), the team from “Who Is America?”, Jim Hoskinson (“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”) and Paul G. Casey (“Real Time with Bill Maher”). He’s defeated Pennolino, Hoskinson and Casey the past two years.

2019 Directors Guild Awards TV nominations: ‘Atlanta,’ ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ lead with 2 each
Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”

Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. On the telefilm/limited series side, Barry Levinson made it a lucky 13 DGA nominations with his bid for “Paterno.” He faces off against Cary Joji Fukunaga

Sacha Baron Cohen On Unseen Shocking Scenes In Trump-Inspired Golden Globe-Nominated Series ‘Who Is America?’
After honing the difficult craft of creating laughs with characters embedded in situations where only he is in a comedy in Da Ali G Show, Borat and Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen turned his skill toward exposing highbrow politicians and hard line conservatives with a coterie of new characters in Who Is America? For his Showtime summer series, Baron Cohen just received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor In A TV Comedy Or Musical, for the six distinctively different characters he disappeared into over seven episodes. Baron Cohen duped numerous high and low level people — including famous politicians like Dick Cheney, Roy Moore, Sarah Palin and O.J. Simpson — and got them and conservative Trump supporters to behave outrageously and reveal racist, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant and homophobic attitudes as his characters nudged subjects to scratch below surface civility. Often side-splittingly funny, the segments provided a glimpse into the divisions around America that

From the King of Comedy to People Just Do Nothing: why the 'cringe com' reigns

Whether it’s cult films or the mockumentary style perfected by The Office, why do we seek discomfort from our comedies?

Everyone agrees that Martin Scorsese’s collaboration with Robert De Niro is one of the great movie double acts. But when laurels are scattered in its general direction (Raging Bull! Taxi Driver! Goodfellas!), few are spared for their tale of a sociopathic failed standup, The King of Comedy. Yet, you could argue that said feature film, 35 years old this year, is the pair’s most influential match-up. From People Just Do Nothing to This Country, survey today’s entertainment landscape and everywhere you see comedy that mainlines awkward pauses and excruciating faux pas. Raging Bull got the Oscars, but The King of Comedy anticipated a movement – cringe comedy – that has come to dominate TV and movie screens everywhere.

Its high-water mark was in the early 2000s, with The Office,
