Review: Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)

Safe to say opinions are getting increasingly low on Hollywood’s wave of remakes, sequels, reboots and prequels, this year alone sees a plethora hitting cinemas from the genuinely awaited follow-ups (Incredibles 2) to some curious reinventions (Robin Hood), to the downright odd decisions (Mary Poppins Returns). So, it is little surprise that when Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was announced people were really quite baffled by a remake of the 1995 action/adventure hit, even more so following the all-too-soon death of its much-loved star Robin Williams. However this film is not actually a remake as such, more a quasi-sequel to the original film and despite the predictably acidic comments from some corners of the Internet (quelle suprise), the film is actually a surprisingly big wallop of enjoyment.

By wisely deciding to keep select strands of the original film’s DNA intact and yet mostly going in a whole new direction,

Breathe review

Andy Serkis' directorial debut, Breathe, has much to recommend it. Here's our review...

Back in 2011, Andy Serkis and producer Jonathan Cavendish set up The Imaginarium, a production company and performance capture studio that has provided effects for Serkis-starring movies like Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the last three Planet Of The Apes movies. Breathe is the Imaginarium's first produced film (though their second on release, after horror movie The Ritual) and as you must be able to guess from the premise, it's a world away from that kind of Hollywood fare.

Based on the true story of Cavendish's parents, we meet 28-year-old Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) as he meets and courts Diana Blacker (Claire Foy.) They marry and move to Kenya soon after and anticipate a lifetime of adventure ahead of them, that is, until Robin falls ill. Polio leaves him paralysed from the neck down,

The Strain Season 4 Episode 9 Review – ‘The Traitor’

Martin Carr reviews the penultimate episode of The Strain season 4…

As we near the end of a four-year odyssey there are layered dialogue scenes, moral questions on both sides about bearing the blame and slicing and dicing aplenty. As we watch ‘The Master’s final trump card being played, disciples being interrogated and megaton bombs being ferried around town like takeaway pizza The Strain steps up a notch.

Goodweather, Dutch, Fet, Quinlan, Gus and Roman have developed into a tightly bonded team. Interlopers, fraudsters and the enemy are quickly sniffed out, dispatched or questioned to gain more information. High points in ‘The Traitor’ focus primarily on dialogue scenes between Goodweather and Zak, Fet and Dutch as well as Desai and everyone else. Penry-Jones continues bringing a disconnected mercenary disposition to proceedings, which underpin any emotional moments or fantastical events. Jonathan Hyde perpetually overlooked incarnation of ‘The Master’ is understated, regally
