New ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie in Development at Marvel

  • Variety
Marvel is going back to the Fantastic Four.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced that a new movie based on the superhero group is in the works at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. Further details, however, including a release date, were not revealed.

It marks the first Fox property for Disney to mine since the two studios officially merged. The most recent “Fantastic Four” movie came out in 2015, and was a flop commercially and critically. It was directed by Josh Trank, and starred Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell.

The Fantastic Four also appeared in a separate film series starting in 2005, starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis.

The Fantastic Four is a superhero team consisting of Mister Fantastic (Reed Richards), who can contort and stretch his body in extraordinary ways; the Invisible Woman (Sue Storm), who can, unsurprisingly, make herself invisible; the

‘Spider Man: Far From Home’ Easter Egg Sparks Buzz for Fantastic Four McU Debut

‘Spider Man: Far From Home’ Easter Egg Sparks Buzz for Fantastic Four McU Debut
Does “Spider-Man: Far From Home” announce the arrival of the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? One easter egg at the end of the latest Marvel blockbuster is stirring up buzz among McU fans. The clue arrives just before the credits as Peter Parker (Tom Holland) swings through the streets of New York City to meet up with Mj (Zendaya). Peter lands in front of the old Avengers Tower, which is being renovated since the headquarters have moved upstate. A sign in front of the building reads, “We Can’t Wait to Show You What Comes Next,” along with the numbers “1-2-3-?”

The visual easter egg could simply be a nod to the upcoming Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been vocal about “Far From Home” marking the definitive end of Phase Three. However, the location of the sign

‘Fantastic Four’ Director Tells Next Helmer of the Franchise to Just ‘Listen to Kevin Feige’

‘Fantastic Four’ Director Tells Next Helmer of the Franchise to Just ‘Listen to Kevin Feige’
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s “Fantastic Four” comic book series has struggled to work on the big screen after three critical misfires: 2005’s “Fantastic Four” and its 2007 sequel “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” followed by the notorious 2015 reboot. The first two films pre-dated the Marvel Cinematic Universe and were directed by Tim Story, who was best known at the time for his comedy work on films such as “Barbershop” and “Taxi.” Story knows firsthand how difficult it is to pull off the Fantastic Four and his career directing superhero tentpoles ended after “Silver Surfer” bombed with audiences.

Story recently caught up with CinemaBlend to promote his latest directing project, the “Shaft” reboot, and got asked to share his best piece of advice to whatever filmmaker ends up taking over the “Fantastic Four” movie franchise in the future. Story responded: “First, I’d tell them to listen to Kevin Feige.

In a perfect world, The Fantastic Four would already be playing an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but sadly, Marvel's first family only recently returned home, having remained in the realm of 20th Century Fox for well over a decade. The Fantastic Four first hit the big-screen in 2005, with Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Jessica Alba as Susan Storm/Invisible Woman,…

John Oliver Backs Late-Night Cohort Seth Meyers With Meghan McCain Dig

John Oliver Backs Late-Night Cohort Seth Meyers With Meghan McCain Dig
John Oliver used part of the opening segment of Last Week Tonight on Sunday to take a swipe at Meghan McCain, the co-host of The View and daughter to the late Sen. John McCain. He also saved a shot for her husband, Ben Domenech.

Both were in Oliver’s crosshairs following McCain’s appearance last week on Late Night With Seth Meyers, when Meyers questioned McCain’s previous comments about Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. A somewhat tension-filled back and forth ensued about what Meyers called McCain’s “dangerous tweets” about Omar’s stance on Israel, with McCain at one point asking Meyers if he was Omar’s publicist.

After the show, Domenech, also founder of the conservative news site The Federalist, laid into Meyers on Twitter, calling him and “a**hole” and “a piece of sh*t” among other things (important note: those tweets were eventually deleted).

Now back to Oliver,

Jolene Anderson and Remy Hii in ‘Harrow’ 2.

Here’s a shout-out to producers: The ABC is keen to find another genre series to fill a gap as Matchbox PicturesGlitch comes to its conclusion after three seasons.

The pubcaster is also looking for a multi-generational relationship drama, comedies for Wednesday nights and shows with diverse casts and creatives across all genres.

That’s the word from ABC head of scripted production Sally Riley. She hopes the funding for her domain – drama, comedy and Indigenous content – for the next financial year will not be less than the last couple of years, despite the federal government-imposed three-year $83.7 million funding cut.

The Ritual Director Takes on The Mist Inspired Thriller Out There

The Ritual Director Takes on The Mist Inspired Thriller Out There
One of my favorite up-and-coming horror directors out there is David Bruckner, and today we have word that he is attached to helm Entertainment One's high concept sci-fi flick Out There. Details are scarce on just what the project is about, but sources say the thriller centers on a family struggling to survive following a mysterious event that changes the course of the world. Sounds like fun to this guy! Even better still is that we hear the movie follows in the vein of Stephen King's classic novella The Mist.

Stephen King's The Mist, for those who somehow might not know, was adapted into a film starring Tom Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laurie Holden back in 2007 from The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile writer-director Frank Darabont. Not to compare apples to soul-devastating oranges, but let me just put out there that if this Out There motion

Voltage Wins Legal Battle Over ‘The Professor And The Madman’ As Judge Tosses Copyright Suit

  • Deadline
Updated, 4:55 Pm: A California judge has thrown out a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed against Voltage Pictures by the writer-director Farhad Safinia over its upcoming Mel Gibson-Sean Penn film The Professor and the Madman. Safinia had claimed ownership of the copyright after penning a 2007 revision of its original 2001 script.

In granting Voltage’s motion for summary judgment, U.S. District Judge Consuelo Marshall wrote: “The undisputed evidence demonstrates Plaintiff does not own rights in the Screenplay. Plaintiff therefore lacks standing for his copyright infringement claim against Defendants.” Read the ruling here and details of the case below.

Vertical Entertainment, which picked up U.S. rights to The Professor and the Madman, is set to release the film during the second quarter of 2019.

Previously, September 2017: The multi-front legal battle between Voltage Pictures and seemingly everyone else over The Professor and The Madman starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn saw

‘The Professor and the Madman’ Trailer: Mel Gibson and Sean Penn Craft the Oxford English Dictionary

In a bit of against-type casting, The Professor and The Madman stars Mel Gibson and Sean Penn, but Gibson is, in fact, not playing the latter character. Rather, in the story of crafting the Oxford English Dictionary, he plays Professor James Murray, who took up the challenge only to discover that one man (Penn), convicted for murder and at an asylum for the criminally insane, submitted over 10,000 words.

Although production on the film began back in 2016, it was caught up in legal troubles, and now with Apocalypto co-screenwriter Farhad Safinia, who helmed the film, taking his name off the project (now credited to the fictitious P.B. Shemran), it’s finally seeing the light of day. The film will be arriving in other countries this spring, though Vertical Entertainment has not yet announced a U.S. release date. The first international trailer has now arrived for the adaptation of Simon Winchester’s novel.
