The music documentary “Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band” will be the opening-night film at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, Tiff organizers announced on Thursday.

The film will premiere on Thursday, September 5 at Roy Thomson Hall to kick off the annual 11-day showcase for more than 200 films. It will be the first Canadian-made documentary to open the festival, and the first music-related film since Davis Guggenheim’s U2 doc “From the Sky Down” premiered on opening night in 2011.

“Once Were Brothers” was directed by Daniel Roher and was inspired by Robertson’s 2016 memoir “Testimony.” It will focus on the years in which the Canadian-born musician got together with fellow Canadians Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko and Arkansas native Levon Helm to form a group that would back Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan and then go on to an acclaimed career as The Band, one of the

Quibi’s multiyear pact with NBC News is an “eight-figure deal,” the Wall Street Journal reported, citing anonymous sources. Quibi says it plans to launch in April 2020, priced at $5 per month with ads and $8 without ads.

Hero Nation: John Carpenter, JJ Abrams Join Hollywood’s Push Into Comics
John Carpenter is taking his Hollywood horror sensibilities to Gotham City, with DC Comics’ recent announcement that the director of The Thing, Halloween, and The Fog is co-writing a special 40-page Joker comic book.

Carpenter isn’t the only Hollywood notable dabbling in the comic book world — far from it, in fact, he’s actually part of a crush of celebrity tourists who are putting their names on comics. The allure for some is the IP creation opportunities, while others hope to tap into the evolving medium’s new indie-spirited cachet. For some it’s a purer pursuit, a low-cost way to produce a pet project or a nostalgic lark that reconnects them with comics traditions and characters they loved in their own youth.

With Hollywood poised to make its annual southbound pilgrimage to San Diego’s Comic-Con International this week, here’s a look at two dozen notable show-biz

Why Jeffrey Katzenberg’s Quibi Is Luring A-List Talent

  • Variety
Why Jeffrey Katzenberg’s Quibi Is Luring A-List Talent
“Training Day” director Antoine Fuqua met with Jeffrey Katzenberg in late 2016, shortly after the presidential election, for an early-morning breakfast session on Los Angeles’ Westside.

Katzenberg, passionate about how younger generations consume shows and movies, wanted to talk about a new concept of entertainment: short-form, highly produced shows and movies that viewers would watch from their smartphones in “chapters.”

A two-and-a-half-hour movie would be broken down into eight- to 10-minute snippets, for example. The service, which launches April 6, 2020, would come to be known as Quibi, short for “quick bites.”

The deals promise to be creator-friendly.

Projects will be exclusively licensed to the service for seven years. But after two years, producers gain the rights to repackage the series as a feature film.

“That alone was an amazing proposition,” Fuqua tells Variety. “I jumped right on that idea. It’s essentially someone paying for the film and you get to own it.

A few months ago, we reported that Chris Evans was hired on to star in the Antoine Fuqua directed thriller Infinite. Variety now reports that Evans is out due to scheduling issues, and Mark Wahlberg is in talks to take his place. Here’s the synopsis for the film:

“[The] script centers on a group of near-immortal men and women who are reincarnated over the centuries and known as ‘the Infinite.’ To defeat an evil mastermind who wants to destroy the planet, the group must rely on a man who suffers from schizophrenia and will have to learn that all his vivid dreams are actually memories from past lives, in order to defeat the villain.”

This sounds like a pretty far out story, but Fuqua is a fantastic director, and I like Wahlberg as an actor, so I think it will be worth giving it a shot.
