In 1939 was up for the lead in Golden Boy at the age of 19. Also acted in a theatre company in Germany during World War II with James and Pamela Mason. Had his own Off-Broadway theatre called the Green Room Studio on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village in the early 50's.
