James Taylor to Join ‘The Voice’ as Mega Mentor
Veteran tunesmith James Taylor is joining “The Voice” in the role of Mega Mentor for the NBC talent competition series.

Taylor will begin his role on the April 13 edition of the series that will feature the four contenders that survive the Battle Rounds as the prepare for the Knockout Rounds. In a twist to the format. each of the four contenders will receive preparation and coaching from their individual coaches and from Taylor.

Voice’s” current lineup of judges — Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton — announced Taylor’s arrival in a one-minute promo that featured the coaches whispering the identity of the mega mentor to one another. At the end Shelton quizzically asks “Elizabeth Taylor?” before Legend corrects him.

Taylor has been a force in the music industry for nearly a half-century. The multi-Grammy Award winner has sold more than 100 million albums during the course of his long career.

Netflix has opted not to reenew provocative drama Messiah for a second season. Series co-star Wil Traval revealed the news on Instagram Thursday.

Netflix has canceled “Messiah” after one season, Variety has confirmed.

Series star Wil Traval shared the news on Instagram, writing, “It’s a very sad day today. I have just received news from Netflix that there will be no season 2 of #messiah I wanted to say to all the fans thank you for your support and love. I wish things were different.”

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Netflix did not feel confident producing a show that required so many international locations given the current state of things with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Steve Stark Named President of Newly Formed MGM/UA Television

The newly formed MGM/UA Television label has found a president in Steve Stark, who previously served as MGM’s president of scripted television production and development.

MGM Worldwide Television Group chairman Mark Burnett made the announcement late Friday, adding that Stark has extended his contract with the studio as part of his new role.

“We are pleased that Steve has extended his deal and is now focused on this new specialized division, as I find new ways to expand the overall MGM TV global group through several new labels,” said Burnett. “This supports our broader commitment to grow MGM’s incredible library IP, just as Steve recently did with the new ‘Vikings: Vahalla’ series. Our IP is unparalleled and is in great demand”.

Stark has been with MGM since 2011. Prior to that he served as president and exec producer of Steve Stark Productions, which had an overall deal with NBCUniversal Television.

Steve Stark, MGM’s President of Scripted Television Production & Development, has been named President of MGM/UA Television, a newly created label. The appointment is part of a new contract Stark has signed with Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s Worldwide Television Group, run by Chairman Mark Burnett.

Over the past eight years, Stark, a well-liked and respected executive, has grown MGM’s scripted footprint with the award-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale and Fargo, both heading into their fourth seasons, as well as Vikings, Get Shorty, Condor, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Perpetual Grace Ltd, among others.

On Wednesday, streaming service HBO Max announced its order for “The Big Shot With Bethenny,” an eight-episode unscripted series in which contestants will compete to work for Bethenny Frankel, the business mogul and former star of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New York City.” Frankel, the founder and CEO of the lifestyle brand Skinnygirl, sold Skinnygirl Cocktails to Beam in 2011, but still oversees the rest of the company, which includes products such as shapewear and popcorn. According to the conceit for the new show — the first from a production deal she made last year with MGM Television and Mark Burnett — Frankel will be looking for a second-in-command for Skinnygirl.

The “Real Housewives of New York” alum has scored an eight-episode order at the nascent streamer for “The Big Shot With Bethenny.” In the half-hour series, aspiring moguls will compete for a chance to win a spot on the executive team of Frankel’s lifestyle brand, Skinnygirl. MGM Television is expanding its international unscripted division with the hire of The Bible showrunner Richard Bedser.

Bedser joins the company, based out of London, as Evp of Factual Series, Documentaries and Specials, reporting to MGM’s President of Unscripted & Alternative Television and Orion Television, Barry Poznick.

This comes after Bedser’s All3Media-backed scripted producer Two Halves Pictures closed at the end of last year.

MGM Television planted its flag in the sand in the UK in November with the hire of former Channel 4 exec Dom Bird.

Prior to launching Two Halves Pictures, Bedser worked closely with Mark Burnett, MGM’s Worldwide Television Chairman and Roma Downey as showrunner on History’s The Bible miniseries and NBC’s A.D. He also exec produced their feature film Son of God,
