Steven Brill is on board to direct from a script written by Sandler and his longtime collaborator and friend Tim Herlihy. The observer reports the following story for the film:

Good-natured but eccentric community volunteer Hubie Dubois (Sandler) finds himself at the center of a real murder case on Halloween night. Despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts (and its legendary Halloween celebration), Hubie is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike. But this year, something really is going bump in the night,

Adam Sandler Reflects on His Chris Farley Tribute Song in Q&A with Paul Thomas Anderson

Adam Sandler Reflects on His Chris Farley Tribute Song in Q&A with Paul Thomas Anderson
Adam Sandler and Paul Thomas Anderson’s most famous collaboration is “Punch Drunk Love,” the director’s 2002 romantic-comedy that redefined the actor’s career. But that wasn’t their last time working together; Anderson stepped in to shoot one night of Sandler’s multi-city stand-up tour, a tour which was eventually transformed into the Netflix special, “Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh.”

The two reconnected again Wednesday night for the special’s Fyc event in Los Angeles, where Anderson moderated a 30-minute panel following a screening for Emmy voters. During the friendly, casual conversation, Anderson asked the comedian about his heartfelt tribute to Chris Farley, which first appeared in “100% Fresh” before Sandler performed it while hosting “Saturday Night Live” earlier this month. “The special is so fucking dirty sometimes, but it’s also so, so emotional, particularly toward the end there,” Anderson said. “I’ve heard that Farley song 50 times, and it still makes me tear up.

Court TV Brand to Resurface as New Channel From Scripps Co.

  • Variety
Court TV is back in session. The cable TV channel that once carried gavel-to-gavel live coverage of high-profile trials will be revived by a new owner, nearly a dozen years after it was shuttered by Turner Broadcasting.

Katz Networks, a division of E.W. Scripps Co., plans to revive Court TV as a new channel designed to be distributed via local TV stations as a multicast offering as well as by MVPDs and streaming platforms starting in May. Katz has acquired the Court TV moniker and some 100,000 hours of vintage Court TV programming from Turner, now owned by At&T.

Vinnie Politan will return as a chief anchor of the channel, which promises 24/7 coverage of trials and legal issues. Also returning is producer John Alleva, a 15-year Court TV veteran who will oversee coverage with CNN alum Scott Tufts out of a newsroom under construction in Atlanta.

Court TV Will Get 2019 Reboot Via E.W. Scripps’ Katz Networks
Court TV, the iconic TV brand known for broadcasting the trials of O.J. Simpson, the Menendez Brothers and Casey Anthony, will relaunch under its old name with a new backer.

Katz Networks, a unit of the E.W. Scripps Co. which operates multicast networks like Bounce, Escape and Grit, will relaunch Court TV in May 2019. Just as it did when it was owned by Turner Broadcasting, the network will be devoted to live, gavel-to-gavel coverage, legal reporting and expert analysis of trials across the country. Court TV’s 17-year run ended in 2008, when Turner rebranded it as truTV.

In order to pull off the reboot, Katz acquired Court TV’s intellectual property, including the trademark, website and 100,000-hour library from Turner. It also brought in original Court TV anchor Vinnie Politan as lead anchor and installed former Court TV and CNN producers John Alleva and Scott Tufts as vice presidents and managing editors.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’re highlighting the noteworthy titles that have recently hit platforms. Check out this week’s selections below and an archive of past round-ups here.

Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (Steven Brill)

All of Adam Sandler’s non-Baumbach-directed Netflix original movies were worth it if it meant we got this. His latest stand-up special is funny, yes, but also honest and emotionally piercing in unexpected ways. It’s a return to form with a sincere dose of nostalgia for both those that grew up with his comedies and for Sandler, who reflects on his career and those that have been with him along the way. I’ve watched it twice this week and nearly teared up both times. Bring on Uncut Gems. – Jordan R.

‘100% Fresh’ Trailer: Adam Sandler’s Netflix Variety Special has New Songs and Dogs on Stage

‘100% Fresh’ Trailer: Adam Sandler’s Netflix Variety Special has New Songs and Dogs on Stage
Adam Sandler is at the point in his career (particularly in his expansive Netflix contract) where if he wants to bring his bulldog out on stage during a live show, that’s just something he does.

That’s just one element of “100% Fresh,” a collection of live performances that Sandler’s done, mainly around the La area, over the past year. Armed with a Champion jacket, his trademark “funny” voice, and a flotilla of guitars acoustic and electric, the official trailer for his new special shows him playing to crowds of various sizes at both indoor and outdoor venues.

The special made waves back in April when Paul Thomas Anderson showed up at a taping for some additional camerawork. “100% Fresh” is directed by longtime Sandler collaborator Steven Brill.

Whether or not this special leans more toward “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” or “The Ridiculous 6” in the greater Adam

Peter Bart: Tech Takeover Makes Hollywood Execs Cower, With No Swagger In Sight
The scene was emblematic: Appearing this week before assembled TV critics, the programming boss of HBO set aside his customary vows to dominate the awards landscape, promising instead that HBO would defeat any pressures to “change our culture.” His aim: to respond to reports that HBO’s new proprietor, At&T, was urgently prodding the network to ratchet up its programming pipeline.

Renowned for its swagger, Hollywood is sending forth a defensive, if not downbeat, vibe these days. A visit to its bars and boites will testify that drinks are flowing but faces are glum.

“The Future Ain’t What It Used to Be” is the appropriate title of an incisive new article written by a man who has little personal reason to fear the future – Bruce Ramer, whose legal practice involves the likes of Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood. The changes at every level of the entertainment business are so vast,

We discover a man who wants to relate with women solely through the recordings he makes of them talking about sex — is that Ok, or not Ok? Muppets reboot coming to Disney’s streaming service

While the last Muppets show did not fare well and was cancelled after only one season ABC, Disney has not given up on Kermit and the gang. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney will reboot The Muppets for its upcoming streaming service.

The previous Muppets series aired on ABC in 2015 and was in the vein of 30 Rock and The Office, showing the behind the scenes of The Muppet’s late-night talk show and the shenanigans Kermit had to deal with. The show, however, was panned by critics and fans alike, resulting in its cancellation. Disney is currently searching for a writer for the new Muppets series.

Disney is hoping to make a streaming service that will compete with Netflix, moving all their properties onto the family-friendly service and creating many new series or rebooting several old ones. Along with The Muppets, Disney is said to be interesting in rebooting

It looks like Disney may be planning to dust off The Mighty Ducks franchise, with THR reporting that ABC Signature Studios is in early development on a TV series based upon the 1990 feature film.

According to the site, ABC Signature chief Tracy Underwood has put the project into development after being approached by Steven Brill, writer of the original trilogy of movies, and produce Jordan Kerner. Brill is set to pen the script, and if it impresses, ABC Signature will look to package the project with talent and shop it out to streaming services, or potentially keep it for Disney’s own upcoming streaming platform.

The Mighty Ducks was released in 1992, and starred Emilio Estevez as Gordon Bombay, an attorney who ends up coaching a young hockey team as community service after being arrested for drink driving. The film was a hit at the box office, and led to two

90’s Disney box office success, The Mighty Ducks, could be set for a revival with a new TV series on the franchise being in the works at ABC signature studios.

With a script yet to be written for the TV show, there are no cast members attached. Whether Estevez will be returning to reprise his role is still to be discussed.

Original trilogy screenwriter Steven Brill has been appointed to pen the script in-house at ABC Signature. Brillstein Entertainment’s George Heller and Brad Petrigala will, like Brill, be credited as executive producers.

Directed by Stephen Herek and starring Emilio Estevez, the original film followed the reckless young lawyer Gordon Bombay (Estevez) after he gets arrested for drunk driving, he must coach a kids hockey team for his community service. Quack quack quack quack The Might Ducks might goooooo to our television screens once more...

Could the Flying V be heading back to TV?

Disney is reportedly developing a new television series based on The Mighty Ducks. It’s nothing to quack about just yet, since the project is in its early stages according to THR, but the franchise may yet skate again on the small screen.

The project comes from ABC Signature Studios, which focuses on ABC’s cable and streaming productions. Steven Brill, the screenwriter for all three of the Mighty Ducks films, approached the studio to dust off the hockey property.

The original film, The Mighty Ducks, was released in 1992 and became a box office success, spawning two sequels, a loosely-based animated series about human-duck hybrids in space, and was also the inspiration for Disney naming its NHL franchise after the fictional team.

According to sources, ABC Signature head Tracy Underwood "put Mighty Ducks in development after being approached by original trilogy screenwriter Steven Brill and original producer Jordan Kerner."
